BANG! BANG! BANG!
The entire house froze.
Nobody moved.
Nobody even breathed properly.
Then the voice came again.
Louder this time.
Angrier.
“OPEN THE DOOR!”
My younger sister started crying immediately.
“Mummy…” she whispered fearfully.
My mother held her tightly, shaking.
My father looked toward the window carefully.
Then his face darkened.
“How many are outside?” I whispered.
“Too many,” he replied quietly.
Fear crawled through my chest instantly.
Another violent bang hit the door.
BANG!!
The whole frame shook.
“They’re going to break in,” my mother whispered.
My father turned sharply toward her.
“Where’s the money?”
Silence.
“Mama Dera!” he snapped.
“WHERE is the money?!”
My mother looked terrified.
Not just scared.
Terrified.
Then suddenly—
CRASH!
The front window shattered.
My siblings screamed instantly.
“Everybody get down!” my father shouted.
Chaos exploded immediately.
My mother pulled the children to the floor.
I crouched beside the couch, heart pounding wildly.
Outside, men were shouting.
Footsteps everywhere.
Then the front door burst open.
Three men stormed inside.
Black clothes.
Weapons.
Cold faces.
And standing behind them…
Was someone I recognized instantly.
My heart stopped.
“No way…”
It was our neighbor.
Uncle Bode.
The same man who always:
greeted my mum every morning
borrowed our pressing iron
bought biscuits for my younger siblings
My chest tightened painfully.
“You?” I whispered.
He couldn’t even look at me properly.
One of the armed men grabbed him roughly.
“You sure this is the place?”
Uncle Bode nodded nervously.
“Yes… yes, she lives here.”
My stomach turned.
He betrayed us.
Tears burned my eyes instantly.
“Why would you do this?” I whispered.
He finally looked at me.
Ashamed.
Scared.
“They threatened my family,” he said weakly.
“They said they’d kill my son…”
Before I could respond—
One of the armed men shouted:
“Where’s Dayo?!”
Silence filled the room immediately.
Then slowly…
My father stood up from behind the wall.
“I’m here.”
The men immediately pointed guns at him.
My younger siblings started crying harder.
The leader stepped forward slowly.
Tall.
Dark.
Calm in the scariest way possible.
“So,” he said softly.
“The ghost finally returned.”
My father didn’t move.
“You should’ve stayed hidden,” the man continued.
“And you should’ve stayed away from my family,” my father replied coldly.
The tension in the room became unbearable.
Then the leader smiled slightly.
“Family?” he repeated.
“You mean the family you abandoned?”
My chest tightened instantly.
“Leave them out of this,” my father warned.
The man laughed softly.
“You don’t make demands anymore.”
Then his eyes landed on me.
And suddenly…
The smile disappeared.
“So this is Dera.”
Fear rushed through me immediately.
He walked closer slowly.
Studying my face.
Then he said something terrifying:
“She really has your eyes.”
My father stepped forward instantly.
“Don’t come near her.”
One of the men cocked his gun immediately.
Everything became dangerously quiet.
Then the leader finally spoke again.
“Bring the drive.”
My father said nothing.
“Bring the money.”
Still silence.
The man’s expression darkened.
“You think this is a game?”
Then suddenly—
He pulled out his phone.
And played another video.
My blood ran cold immediately.
Kunle.
This time…
He looked worse.
Much worse.
Bruised face.
Blood on his shirt.
Barely conscious.
My younger siblings started crying loudly.
My mother nearly collapsed.
Then the man behind the camera spoke:
“Last warning.”
Suddenly—
Kunle lifted his head weakly.
And looked directly into the camera.
Then he whispered something.
Barely audible.
But I heard it.
“Don’t trust…”
The video cut off immediately.
The room went silent again.
Don’t trust who?
My heart started racing.
Then suddenly…
The leader’s phone buzzed.
He frowned while reading the message.
And for the first time…
He looked surprised.
“What?” one of the men asked.
The leader slowly looked up.
Straight at my mother.
Then smiled.
A dangerous smile.
“Well…” he said softly.
“This just got interesting.”
My chest tightened immediately.
“What happened?” my father asked cautiously.
The leader held up his phone slowly.
Then said the words that shattered everything again:
“The bank just confirmed it.”
Silence.
“The hidden money was moved tonight.”
Everybody froze.
Slowly…
Very slowly…
We all turned toward my mother.
Her face had gone completely pale.
My heart dropped instantly.
“Mum…” I whispered.
But before she could say anything—
One of the armed men suddenly shouted:
“SHE’S RUNNING!”
I turned sharply.
And screamed.
Because my mother was already sprinting toward the back door…
Holding a black travel bag.
My breathing stopped completely.
The money.
She had the money.
And she was trying to escape.
BANG!!
A gunshot exploded through the house.
My mother fell instantly.
And the black bag rolled across the floor.

“She lied to you too.”
Those words refused to leave my head.
I stared at my father in disbelief.
“No,” I whispered.
“My mum wouldn’t—”
“She was trying to protect you,” he interrupted.
“STOP saying that!” I snapped.
“Everybody keeps hiding things and calling it protection!”
The car became silent again.
Because deep down…
I was scared he might be telling the truth.
All the secret calls.
The panic.
The fear in her eyes.
Something was wrong.
Very wrong.
“I need to talk to her,” I said firmly.
My father nodded slowly.
“But don’t trust everything she says.”
That annoyed me instantly.
“You disappeared for years,” I said coldly.
“You don’t get to tell me who to trust.”
Pain flashed across his face again.
But this time…
He didn’t argue.
When we finally got home, the compound was unusually quiet.
Too quiet.
My younger siblings were asleep in the sitting room.
Probably cried themselves to sleep.
But my mother…
Was waiting for me.
The moment she saw me enter—
She stood up immediately.
“Where have you been?!” she asked anxiously.
Then her eyes landed on my father behind me.
And her entire face changed.
Fear.
Shock.
Anger.
Pain.
“Dayo…” she whispered.
So it was true.
My chest tightened painfully as I looked between both of them.
“You know him,” I said quietly.
Neither of them answered immediately.
Then my mother laughed bitterly.
Not happy laughter.
The kind people laugh when they’re tired of suffering.
“So you finally showed yourself,” she said coldly.
My father looked at her calmly.
“This isn’t the time.”
“No,” she snapped.
“This is exactly the time.”
I looked at both of them, confused and angry.
“Somebody better start explaining NOW.”
Silence filled the room.
Heavy silence.
Then my mother slowly sat down.
Like the truth itself was exhausting her.
“He’s your father,” she said quietly.
Even though I already knew…
Hearing it from her still hurt differently.
Tears burned my eyes immediately.
“You lied to me my whole life…”
Her eyes filled instantly.
“I was trying to protect you.”
I almost screamed.
“From WHAT?!”
My father answered this time.
“From me.”
I turned sharply toward him.
“What did you do?!”
He hesitated.
Too long again.
Then my mother finally spoke.
“Your father used to work for dangerous men,” she said quietly.
“At first, it was small business deals… but later it became something darker.”
My stomach twisted.
“He wanted to leave after you were born,” she continued.
“But by then it was already too late.”
I looked at my father.
“So you ran away?”
“No,” my mother replied before he could speak.
“He disappeared because people were trying to kill him.”
Silence.
“And us?” I whispered.
My mother’s lips trembled.
“They threatened us too.”
Everything suddenly felt cold.
“So all these years…”
She nodded slowly.
“I changed your surname. I married Kunle. We moved. We stayed quiet.”
My chest tightened painfully.
“And the money?”
My mother looked away immediately.
Big mistake.
“You knew about it,” I said.
Silence.
“Mum.”
She finally nodded slowly.
Tears rolled down my face instantly.
“So every time I was confused… every time I was scared…”
I swallowed hard.
“You knew.”
“I didn’t want you involved in this life!” she cried.
“But I’m already involved!”
The room exploded into silence again.
Then suddenly—
My father stepped forward.
“There’s no more time,” he said firmly.
“They have Kunle.”
That changed everything immediately.
Fear returned instantly.
My mother’s face went pale.
“What do they want?”
“The drive,” he replied.
“And the hidden money.”
My mother froze.
Completely.
That reaction told me everything.
“There IS hidden money,” I whispered.
She didn’t answer.
“Mum…”
Nothing.
“MUM!”
Finally…
She broke.
“Yes!” she shouted.
“Yes, there’s money!”
My breathing stopped.
“How much?”
Silence.
Then she whispered:
“Twenty million naira.”
The room went dead silent.
WHAT?!
My knees nearly gave way.
Twenty million?!
While we were suffering?!
“You had TWENTY MILLION hidden?!” I screamed.
Tears poured down her face immediately.
“You don’t understand!”
“THEN EXPLAIN IT!”
“That money is blood money!” she cried.
Silence.
My heart dropped instantly.
“What?”
My father closed his eyes.
Like he already knew this would happen.
My mother looked at me with shaking lips.
“That money destroyed people…”
Cold fear crawled into my chest.
“And if those men don’t get it back…”
She swallowed hard.
“…they’ll kill all of us.”
My breathing became uneven again.
Everything suddenly felt impossible.
Twenty million naira.
Dangerous men.
A kidnapped father.
A secret past.
And me?
Just a girl who thought mysterious alerts were blessings.
Then suddenly—
A loud knock hit the door.
Everybody froze.
Another knock.
Harder this time.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
My younger siblings woke up immediately, scared.
Then a voice shouted from outside:
“Open the door!”
My blood ran cold instantly.
Because I recognized the voice.
It was the man from the phone call.
And he sounded angry.
“Or we’ll come in ourselves.”

20/05/2026

I couldn’t breathe after watching the video.
Kunle looked weak.
Bruised.
Terrified.
And the worst part?
He kept looking directly at the camera like he wanted to say something.
Like he was trying to warn me.
“You have 24 hours.”
The voice echoed in my head repeatedly.
Bring the girl…
Or the man dies.
I slowly lowered the phone.
My hands trembling badly.
“This is your fault,” I whispered.
My father closed his eyes briefly.
Like he expected that.
“I know.”
Anger exploded inside me immediately.
“You brought this into our lives!”
The driver glanced nervously through the mirror.
The entire car felt tense.
Heavy.
“You think sending money makes you a hero?” I shouted.
“We were surviving before you came back!”
Pain flashed across his face.
Real pain.
“I never wanted this to happen.”
“But it DID!” I cried.
“They took the only father I’ve ever known!”
Silence.
That sentence hit him hard.
I saw it immediately.
Because no matter what happened…
Kunle was still the man who raised me.
The one who attended PTA meetings.
Who bought me meat pie after school when he had extra money.
Who taught me how to ride a bicycle.
And now he was kidnapped because of a man I barely knew.
“We’re going to get him back,” my father said firmly.
“How?” I snapped.
“By sending another alert?!”
He looked away.
Then quietly said:
“I may have one last chance.”
My chest tightened.
“What does that mean?”
He hesitated.
Too long.
That was when I knew.
He was still hiding something.
“What aren’t you telling me?” I asked slowly.
No answer.
“Dad.”
The word felt strange.
But it made him finally look at me.
“What are you hiding?”
He took a deep breath.
Then reached into his jacket slowly.
And pulled out a small flash drive.
My heart skipped.
“What is that?”
His expression darkened immediately.
“The real reason they’re after me.”
Silence.
“This contains records,” he continued.
“Names. Accounts. Deals. Everything.”
My stomach twisted.
“Evidence?”
He nodded.
“Against dangerous people.”
I stared at the flash drive.
Suddenly understanding why all this felt bigger than just money.
“If this gets out…” he said quietly, “…a lot of powerful people will fall.”
My chest tightened.
“So why keep it?!”
“Because it’s the only thing keeping us alive.”
The car became silent again.
Then suddenly—
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
My heart started racing instantly.
“Don’t answer,” my father warned immediately.
But something inside me said I should.
I picked up slowly.
“Hello…?”
A deep voice laughed softly.
“So this is Dera.”
Fear crawled down my spine instantly.
“Who is this?”
“You already know who I am,” the man replied calmly.
My grip tightened on the phone.
“What do you want?”
“I want what your father stole.”
My breathing became shaky.
“And if I refuse?”
Silence.
Then—
“You watched the video, didn’t you?”
My heart dropped.
“Tick tock, Dera.”
The call ended.
I stared at my screen in silence.
Then another message entered immediately after.
A location pin.
My blood ran cold.
Underneath it was a message:
“Come alone.”
“No,” my father said immediately after reading it.
“You’re not going.”
I looked at him sharply.
“Kunle will die if I don’t.”
“It’s a trap.”
“I KNOW!” I shouted.
Tears filled my eyes again.
“I know it’s a trap! But what am I supposed to do?!”
The car became quiet.
Then suddenly…
My father said something that shocked me completely.
“There may be another way.”
I frowned.
“What way?”
He hesitated.
Then quietly said:
“There’s somebody we can trade instead.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
He looked away.
Guilty.
Uneasy.
Then he said the one thing I never expected.
“Your mother knows where the rest of the money is hidden.”
Silence.
Everything inside me froze.
“The rest… of the money?”
AsHe nodded slowly.
“There’s more.”
My chest tightened painfully.
“How much more?”
He looked directly at me.
“Enough to disappear forever.”
My mind went blank.
Because suddenly…
Everything my mother said…
Every secret call…
Every strange reaction…
Started making terrifying sense.
Then my father whispered something that shattered me completely:
“She lied to you too.”
