Chapter 6
Hidden Files and Half Truths
The message haunted her all day.
“You’re not safe with either of them. Someone came to Brazil with a mission. And it wasn’t love.”
But who sent it?
And what mission?
That evening, Amara pretended to be asleep. Zina was on a call in the next room, speaking in hushed tones.
“He hasn’t told her yet. No, she suspects nothing. Trust me… I’ll handle it.”
The call ended. Zina stepped out quietly.
Amara’s eyes flew open. Her heart thundered.
Who hadn’t told her what?
She got up, crept to Zina’s bag, and opened the front pocket. Inside was a flash drive. Small. Ordinary. But wrapped in a paper with one word written in red ink:
“Lucas.”
Her breath caught.
Why would Zina be hiding something with his name on it?
She took the flash drive and slipped it into her jacket.
Later, she met Lucas in the city square. He smiled like always, but she noticed something new. He looked tired. Nervous.
“What’s wrong?” she asked.
He hesitated. “There’s something I need to tell you.”
Her body tensed.
“I wasn’t completely honest with you the first time we met,” he said, looking down. “I work with a small agency that helps track people running from legal issues in other countries. Zina was on our radar. That’s how I found you.”
Amara froze. “So you followed me?”
“No Amara, listen. You weren’t the target. Zina is. But when I saw you… everything changed.”
She pulled back, shaking her head. “And Chuka? You knew about him too?”
Lucas looked genuinely confused. “What? No. I didn’t even know there was another man involved.”
She stared at him, heart racing. “Then what’s on this?” she asked, pulling out the flash drive.
His face went pale.
“I need to see that,” he said, voice low.
They rushed to an internet café. Lucas plugged it in, and together they watched.
The screen lit up with documents, fake passports, transfer records, emails… with Lucas’s name on some.
Amara turned to him, horrified. “Why is your name on forged documents?”
