Nigeria is strengthening its counterterrorism approach by integrating military leadership, forensic expertise and advanced ballistic technology into a more coordinated system.

Officials say the focus is now on ensuring that weapons recovered during operations are analysed and used to generate intelligence that can prevent future attacks.

The effort brings together actors across the security and technology space, marking a shift toward a more evidence-driven and forward-looking security framework.

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have successfully repelled a coordinated five-pronged terrorist attack on military positions in Mallam Fatori, Borno State.

In a large-scale engagement involving drone-supported insurgent assaults, Nigerian forces, supported by air power and allied assets, neutralised over 80 fighters, including high-profile commanders.

Weapons, explosives and drone components were recovered, while follow-up operations are ongoing to prevent regrouping.

The operation represents a significant disruption to insurgent command structures in the North-East and underscores sustained military pressure in the region.

A new warfare model is emerging as drones and advanced missile systems are increasingly deployed together to create pressure at scale.

Experts warn that this approach is exposing cost imbalances, straining air defence systems, and forcing a rethink of how modern militaries sustain operations.

The implications extend beyond traditional battlefields, with civilian infrastructure and system integration now central to defence planning.

Nigeria has begun a national Counter-IED baseline assessment to strengthen capacity across military, law enforcement, and security agencies.

The initiative, coordinated by the National Counter Terrorism Centre, integrates international expertise from UNMAS and the British High Commission to evaluate operational readiness and close capability gaps.

Why it matters: Improvised explosive devices threaten lives, hinder economic activity, displace communities, and restrict humanitarian access. This assessment aims to create a coordinated, sustainable, multi-agency strategy to address these challenges.

The workshop sets the foundation for a data-driven, strategic approach to IED threats and regional security collaboration.

Nigeria and Egypt are strengthening military cooperation as both armies expand collaboration in professional training, intelligence exchange, and strategic defence engagement.

During a meeting at Army Headquarters in Abuja, Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu received Egyptian Defence Attaché Col. Mohammed Ibrahim to review progress on the 2024 defence cooperation agreement between both militaries.

The discussions explored deeper collaboration in advanced military training, strategic-level professional education, and new areas including aviation capability development and operational support systems.

As security challenges evolve across regions, sustained defence partnerships are playing an increasingly important role in building professional competence, operational readiness, and shared security capacity.

Nigeria and South Africa are strengthening military cooperation as both armies deepen professional exchange and operational learning.

During his official visit to Abuja, South African Army Chief Lt. Gen. Lawrence Mbatha revealed that the South African Army is studying lessons from the Nigerian Army’s extensive operational experience in countering insurgency, terrorism, and other asymmetric threats.

He also commended the high standards of Nigeria’s military training institutions, including the Nigerian Defence Academy and the Army War College Nigeria, noting their role in developing competent strategic leaders.

As African militaries face evolving security threats, stronger partnerships and shared operational knowledge are becoming critical to building collective security capacity across the continent.

When COVID-19 disrupted global medicine, African communities turned to knowledge systems that existed long before modern pharmaceutical supply chains.

Traditional healers, botanists, and researchers revisited indigenous plants, herbal treatments, and community-based health practices.

The real question is bigger than the pandemic: Can Africa transform its indigenous medical knowledge into strategic healthcare sovereignty?

This analysis examines what that future could look like. https://www.zigdiaries.com/2026/03/africas-indigenous-healing-knowledge.html

Conflicts today unfold not only on battlefields but also within the global information space.

In this guest commentary, SK Usman explores how propaganda, misinformation and manipulated narratives increasingly shape public perception during times of conflict.

With social media accelerating the speed of information flow, unverified claims can spread globally within minutes, often influencing opinions before facts are established.

The article highlights why verification, critical thinking and responsible information sharing are now essential tools for navigating modern conflicts.

Nigeria’s military capability is evolving through technology and training combined.

The Nigerian Army has received 15 locally produced Vanquisher Armoured Personnel Carriers while the Army Chief ordered stronger combat engineering training at the Nigerian Army School of Military Engineering.

The message is clear: national security increasingly depends on indigenous defence production and specialised military expertise.
