Episode 2: Compulsory Treatment of Patients and Informed Consent
A dying person is entitled to the dignity of a human person. That is why Doctors still treat patients who have terminal diseases. The National Health Act (NHA), made provision for compulsory treatment of a patients. No patient should be sent back by health facilities for whatever reason including the reason of inability to pay. Patients have the right to autonomy of human person and the autonomy is such that before a doctor touches a patient for examination and treatment, the patient must give a nod. Doctors should not treat a patient without the patient’s informed consent. The law relating to the consent of the patient, S. 23 of NHA is so entrenched that no matter how foolish the patient is, no matter how beneficial the proposed treatment is, no matter how harmless the procedure might be, the doctor must obtain the consent of the patient because human being is made up of body and spirit. You don’t destroy the spirit in the process of saving the body.
