HPV: TO VACCINATE OR NOT? A CASE FOR INFORMED CONSENT.
Friends, relatives and clients are calling me to ask about the HPV vaccine that they are supposed to consent for their daughters to receive. Medical ethics requires, and its the right of parents, to be provided with truthful information such that they give an informed consent.
Human Papilloma Virus is a Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD). The selling slogan of this vaccine that "its a vaccine against Cancer of the Cervix" is false. This is a vaccine against an STD! Should we be teaching our children to take vaccines to prevent STD’s?
Whereas it is true that 16 of the over 100 HPV viruses are closely associated with Cancer of the Cervix, one can only contract HPV infection s*xually. Further, Cancer of the Cervix can occur without HPV infection.
On average, natural immunity heals over 90% of HPV infection within the first two years of HPV infection. Only 0.1% of HPV infections progress to cancer of the cervix and even then, this progression takes over 8-10 years.
In women who have s*x, a pap smear done every three years would pick up changes that can lead to cancer 8 – 10 years before the cancer develops. This allows for very simple and cheap treatment targeted at those affected long before the onset of Cancer of the Cervix. A pap smear done at leadt every 3 years from the first anniversary of the first ever s*xual experience is the best and most cost effective way of defeating Cancer of the Cervix. This is what the West used to eradicate deaths from Cancer of the Cervix long before the development of the HPV vaccine.
No vaccine is 100% safe, we always weigh and trade off risk versus benefit. Why would you risk the health of 99.1% healthy girls in an attempt to save 0.1% from Cancer of the Cervix when the pap smear would be sufficient?
In my personal opinion, no vaccine can compare to a natural cure rate of 99.9%! Neither is it necessary to take a risk with a vaccine for a s*xually transmitted disease that seems to be associated with premature menopause.
It is important to delink HPV prevention from the prevention of cancer of the cervix. There are cheaper and safer ways of dealing with cancer of the cervix than vaccinating ALL our girls.
At personal level, I have explained to my daughter that the best way to avoid ALL STD's is s*xual morality and I will continue to pray that she makes the best choices. I then wrote a formal letter to her school with clear instructions not to vaccinate her. After she is 18 and feels differently, she can make her informed choice.
Here is a link to a clip titled “Sacrificial virgins” made by parents of children injured by the HPV vaccine in UK.
I hope that after reading my opinion and watching the clip, you will feel empowered enough to make the best choice for your child.
