CHRAN PRESS STATEMENT

FLOOD DISASTER: CHRAN SEEKS URGENT ACTIONS, COMMENDS GOVERNOR UMO ENO'S VISIT TO AFFECTED COMMUNITIES

The Center for Human Rights and Accountability Network (CHRAN) commends the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, for personally visiting flood-affected communities in Uyo on Saturday, 18th July, 2026, where he assessed the extent of the recent devastation, sympathised with victims, and announced immediate steps aimed at tackling the recurring flooding challenge in the state.

Following CHRAN's earlier statement of Sunday, 12th July, 2026, calling for compassionate leadership and a more visible government response to the disaster which occurred on Wednesday, 8th July, 2026, our Center is encouraged that the Governor has yielded the call and visited the affected areas, interacting with residents, thereby demonstrating solidarity with families who suffered losses as a result of the flood.

The Center notes that leadership is not only about providing policies and infrastructure but also about identifying with the people during moments of pain and uncertainty. The Governor's visit has therefore sent a reassuring message to affected residents that their plight has not gone unnoticed.

The CHRAN particularly welcomes the Governor's directive for an urgent review of the state's drainage master plan within one week, his commitment to implementing both short-term and long-term solutions to flooding in Uyo and its environ.

On the Governor's declaration that buildings obstructing natural waterways will be removed, the CHRAN advises that it should be done in accordance with the law, with appropriate compensation fully paid where necessary so that the constitutional rights of those affected are not violated. These are significant policy commitments which, if faithfully implemented by Governor Umo Eno, could mark a turning point in the state's response to decades of urban flooding.

While welcoming these commitments, CHRAN emphasises that the success of this intervention will not only be measured by the inspection tour, or by the announcements made to the media, but by the concrete actions that follow this visit. The people of Akwa Ibom state have witnessed recurring floods over the years, and they understandably desire solutions that are sustainable rather than temporary.

CHRAN urges the Government of Akwa Ibom State to ensure that every commitment made by the Governor during the inspection is implemented faithfully and without delay.

CHRAN assures the Government and people of the state that our Center will continue to monitor developments with regards to flooding, acknowledges positive actions of Government where they occur, constructively engages the Government by advocating for policies and programmes that promote transparency, protection of lives and property, advance the course of rule of law and public interest, as well as hold the Government accountable for its actions and inactions.

Our Center looks forward to the Governor's directives during this visit being urgently translated into measurable actions by relevant state Government's agencies in order to spare the people from the devastating consequences of future flooding in a few weeks to come.

PRESS RELEASE

A'Ibom Tax Bills'll Protect Low-income earners, promote SMEs, boost economic growth - AKIRS

The Executive Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Internal Revenue (AKIRS), Sir Okon Okon, has stated that the Akwa Ibom State Tax Bills currently under consideration at the State House of Assembly will bring relief to the low income earners, promote small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs), as well as boost economic growth in the State.

Okon made the observation on Wednesday, 4th February, 2026 during a public hearing on three executive bills, namely, Akwa Ibom State Revenue Service and Administration Bill 2025; Akwa Ibom State Taxes and Levies Bill 2025; and Akwa Ibom State Betting and Lottery Regulatory Agency Bill 2025. Okon, who is a Member of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, gave other benefits of the State Tax Bills to include elimination of multiple taxes, stoppage of road blocks for revenue collections, harmonization of tax collection, e.g. property tax, daily ticket, etc; and uniformity in tax administration and rates across the Federation.

Others, he noted, are ease of doing business, exemptions and reduction in personal income tax for low income bracket, zero VAT on food, transport, health, education and rent; elimination of minimum tax on losses, and elimination of nuisance taxes.

Sir Okon said: "The tax reforms has brought a lot of good news to the people. One, what used to be multiple taxes, about 46 taxes between the state and local governments, have been harmonized, under the bills, into nine taxes for all the State of the federation, not only Akwa Ibom. Two, for low-income earners, those who earn under N800,000 and below, have been completely exempted from Personal Income Tax, whereas last year, it was N300,000 and below".

Describing the old tax laws which came to an end on December 31st, 2025 as archaic and obsolete, he added, "Moreover, five items: food, health, education, rent, and mass transportation have been put at zero VAT rate. That should bring a lot of relief to households. Then, there is digitization of tax processes for efficiency, transparency and accountability”.

URUAN LOCAL GOVERNMENT HONORS FALLEN HEROES IN A THANKSGIVING SERVICE.

Uruan Local Government Council held a solemn thanksgiving service at the Apostolic Church Ifiayong Usuk today to commemorate Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed annually on January 15th. The event was themed "Valour, Sacrifice and Unity".

In his homily, "We Are More Than Conquerors" (Romans 8:37 and 12:1), District Pastor Apostle Peter Asuquo Okon (JP) extolled the Armed Forces for their unwavering commitment to Nigeria's security and existence. He drew parallels between their sacrifices and Jesus Christ's ultimate sacrifice, irrespective of His priestly status, highlighting their devotion to duty.

Apostle Okon charged Christians, especially those in positions of influence, to use their platforms to uplift the downtrodden and promote social and economic justice within the nation. He pointed out that a better society can be built when the wealthy make sacrifices to support the poor, regardless of their backgrounds, lineages, and affiliations.

The pastor urged the government at both national and subnational levels to go beyond commemorating Remembrance Day and provide meaningful support to the families of fallen heroes.

The Executive Chairman of the council, Hon. Surv. Iniobong Ekpenyong, who had earlier taken part in the Bible reading (Psalms 103:1-5), commended the Armed Forces for their resilience, bravery, and selflessness towards the nation's integrity. The Chairman of the Legion, Major Pius Ekpenyong, remarked that he was personally touched by the sermon, noting that Apostle Okon spoke with conviction, as if he had once been a soldier, but attributed it to the spirit of God guiding him. He described the military as a profession of dignity and honor, and noted that the event was a solemn moment of reflection, particularly for those who died for the nation's interest. He underscored that the sacrifices of the military personnel should be reciprocated by the government whom he described as next to God and encouraged the youths of Uruan to enroll in the Nigerian army to defend the course of their fatherland.

Ikot Ekpene Lawmaker Makes Case for Fire Outbreak Incident in His Constituency .. decried in-availability of functional fire service, experts in the area.

By Bassey Endurance (Patience)

The member representing Ikot Ekpene/Obot Akara State Constituency at the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Hon. Jerry Hanson Otu has reported a case of inferno that wreaked havock on the struggling traders in Ikot Ekpene Market which he said has left a good number of them helpless and frustrated.

The case was raised by Mr. Otu through a matter of utmost urgent importance on the floor of the House during Tuesday's plenary, the lawmaker said : "the incident occured precisely on the 22nd day of November, 2025. An inferno razed down about 15 shops and the owners of those shops are citizens of Ikot Ekpene more or less, the fault wasn't theirs, it was a fire incident and they couldn't rescue anything".

Describing the incident as pathetic considering the season he stated that the inferno has caused his constituents their fortunes and lost of livelihood as he also admitted that a good number of them were trading with loaned monies and he therefore urges the State Government to come to their aids to enable them recover from the situation.

"The traders have lost goods worth millions of naira, a good number of them were trading with loaned monies and all of that are gone so I am hereby pleading that with the magnanimity of the Governor, His Excellency Pastor Umo Eno who is a man with human sympathy they should be assisted with relief materials so they, the affected traders could recover especially at this festive season so that they after crying should have something to dry their tears".
The motion which was seconded by Member Representing Etinan State Constituency, Hon. Uduak Ekpo-Ufot got the support of the House.

Lending his voice, the member representing Ibesikpo/Asutan State Constituency, Hon. (Engr.) Ubong Attah said that the matter raised by Hon. Jerry Otu is really empathetic in consideration of the present situations and he said that it is pertinent that the State Government should take steps to look into the situation and see ways of offer assistance to ameliorate their situations.
On the immediate remedial measures taken Hon. Otu during an interaction with selected members of the press outside the chambers disclosed that himself and the Local Government Chairman are working towards it while also awaiting for the response from the Emergency Management Control under the office of the deputy Governor.

He further blamed the decree of the damage to the in-availability of functional fire service station and professional officials who he reasoned that the situation could have been mitigated if such was in place.

"The issue again is that Ikot Ekpene being the first demonstrated Local Government in West Africa we don't have a functional fire service which is very wrong and the department there are also complaining that the head of the fire service station there should be a professional. The people there are even ready to write a petition on that and we shall welcome it. I believe that if we had a proper fire station at least a percentage of that damage could have been saved but they had to wait for Uyo to sent vehicles and so you could imagine the hours of the delay", He explained.

Meanwhile, the house in it's resolution while adopting the motion resolved that the clerk of the House, Mrs. Nsikakabasi Orok should write the Emergency Management Control Committee through the office of the deputy Governor which is in-charge for an immediate intervention.

Transformer Scandal Rocks Ikot Akpan Ediene
... Villagers Demand Suspension of Village Head over Alleged N20 million Fraud.

By Bassey Endurance

Members of Ikot Akpan Ediene in Oku Clan, Uyo are calling for the suspension of Etteidung Ekpongntak Japheth as Village Head, following his alleged involvement in a Transformer Fraud estimated at Twenty Million Naira (N20,000, 000) which were donated by the State Government through the Ministry of Rural Development.

The donated transformers, three (3) in number, were delivered on the 24th of September, 2010; 5th of January, 2016 and 8th of January 2016; with serial numbers: 300KVA, 33/0.415KVABB, 300KVA ILTR 0001922 and 300KVA, 3 3/0.415VA respectively, and received on behalf of the community by Etteidung Ekpongntak Udoobong.

Accordingly, reports and findings by this reporter revealed that Ikot Akpan Ediene Village already had two (2) transformers before these three (3) were given.

Having received these three, findings revealed that they were surreptitiously sold out to one BENCO COPPER VENTURES, LAGOS; an Engineering Company based in Lagos State for a meager sum of Three Million, Four Hundred Thousand Naira (3, 400, 000), paid at three instalments, ranging between the periods of July 1st to July ending, 2024 as sighted in some documents by this reporter.

Also, our reporter learnt that the suspected Village Chief, Etteidung Ekpongntak Japthat Udoobong had falsely represented two different Family Heads namely; Nung Ekandem and Obong Eno John Udofa to append their signatures on a document to enable him secure the three (3) transformers to BENCO COPPER VENTURES, LAGOS pretending that they were for repairs for which this news medium also gathered that the process was illegal as such letter was not with the recognized village letter headed paper.

Obong Eno John Udofa earlier mentioned upon realizing that the three (3) transformers were sold instead by the Village Head for which he knew nothing about and has sworn to an Affidavit on Oath at the High Court of Akwa Ibom State disassociating himself from the illegal transaction by the village head (Documents Bearing Affidavits on Oath also sighted by our reporter).

The Ikot Akpan Ediene community in their petition through KENNY I. AkAkAm&co 25, NEPA line Uyo to Nigeria security & Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) which was received on 9/9/25, is urging the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency Pastor Umo Eno to kindly suspend the suspected Village Head, Etteidung Ekpongntak Japheth Udoobong, as he cannot retain the throne as a Village Head while currently undergoing investigation and Court litigation on corrupt cases of fraud, stealing and embezzlement of Community and Government Properties.

Meanwhile, the team of petitioners led by a respected indigene of the Community (name Withheld) also disclosed to our reporter that several petitions and copies of such petitions have on several occasions been forwarded to the Executive Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area, Dr. Uwemedimo Udo and other Anti-aircraft Agencies but worried why there have been no response to them.

They equally requested the Secretary to State Government, SSG, Hon. Prince Enobong Uwah and the Honorable Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mkpisong Frank Archibong to also step into the matter to ensure that the three (3) transformers belonging to the community are recovered and handed over to the community.

Also, they are asking that appropriate punishment and sanctions should be meted on Etteidung Ekpongntak Japheth Udoobong to serve as deterrent to others who may be contemplating carrying out similar fraudulent acts of embezzlement and vandalism on Government owned properties.

Etteidung Ekpongntak Japheth udoobong, the suspected Village Chief when contacted by this Reporter through phone calls on the matter while carrying out this report did not deny the allegations but said that he wouldn't love to make any comment on the issues for now.
