Elon Musk has launched a new AI-focused software company called Macrohard, which he intends to be a direct competitor to Microsoft. The name is a "tongue-in-cheek" play on Microsoft, but Musk has stated that the project is "very real."
Macrohard is being developed under Musk's existing AI company, xAI. His vision for the company is to create a "purely AI software company" that can simulate and produce all the software typically created by a traditional company, such as Microsoft. Musk believes that since companies like Microsoft don't manufacture physical hardware, their entire operations could be replicated by AI.
The plan for Macrohard involves using a multi-agent system where specialized AI agents for coding, image generation, and other tasks work together. These agents will then simulate human interaction with the software within virtual machines to refine it to a high-quality standard. This approach is intended to create a wide range of software, including productivity tools and video games, that could rival Microsoft's offerings.
Macrohard will leverage xAI's supercomputing infrastructure, including the Colossus supercomputer, and will acquire millions of Nvidia GPUs to compete with other major AI players like OpenAI and Meta. The company's trademark was registered by xAI with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office prior to the public announcement.
