While we, the Positive Alliance For Deltans, strongly condemn the arrest and detention of journalist Fejiro Oliver, we believe it is also imperative to address a growing concern within the media space the blurring line between investigative journalism and blackmail.

Journalism is a noble profession, rooted in truth, integrity, and accountability. It is a pillar of democracy and a shield for the voiceless. However, when practitioners begin to exploit their platforms for personal gain, threaten individuals with exposure unless paid, or manipulate facts for character assassination, they cease to be journalists and become blackmailers.

We call on the media community, press unions, and journalism schools to redouble efforts in promoting ethical standards in the profession. Constructive journalism seeks the truth, engages all sides, and presents facts with fairness. It is solution-driven, not sensational. It holds leaders accountable without playing judge and jury, and it uplifts society, rather than tearing it apart for selfish motives.

At the same time, governments must respect press freedom and address any misconduct within the limits of the law. Arresting journalists without due process sends the wrong signal and opens the door for dictatorship.

We therefore demand:
1. A clear investigation into the circumstances surrounding Fejiro Oliver’s arrest.
2. A renewed national conversation about media responsibility and ethics.
3. Respect for due process and human rights in handling all issues related to the press.

Sheriff Oborevwori, Executive Governor of Delta State, of prioritizing personal political interest over peace and security in the Warri Federal Constituency.

We wish to state categorically that this accusation is not only misleading but does a disservice to the tireless efforts of the Governor to sustain peace, promote equity, and foster inclusivity across all ethnic nationalities in Delta State.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has remained committed to the “MORE Agenda” ensuring Meaningful Development, Opportunities for all, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security. These principles have guided his administration and are evident in his non-discriminatory development approach across the Ijaw, Itsekiri, Urhobo, Isoko, Anioma, and other communities.

The unfortunate misinterpretation of the Governor’s statements reflects a narrow reading disconnected from his larger message of political inclusion, dialogue, and peaceful coexistence. At no time did the Governor assert that political votes are more important than peace or human lives. Such insinuations are unfounded and should be discarded.

On the issue of the INEC Ward Delineation Exercise, it is important to note that this is a federal matter handled independently by the Independent National Electoral Commission. The Governor has no constitutional powers to influence ward delineation but remains open to dialogue and supports peaceful engagement from all stakeholders.

It is equally important to clarify that the alleged actions of the Warri South LGA Chairman and the police regarding the removal of publicity materials are being investigated. Governor Oborevwori does not support impunity and has never encouraged any form of disrespect to any traditional institution or ethnic group. His record of mutual respect for all kingdoms and leaders in Delta State speaks for itself.

We urge our respected brothers in the IYC and other stakeholders to channel their concerns through constructive dialogue, rather than incendiary language that could worsen tensions. The Governor remains a father to all and is ever willing to engage with stakeholders to resolve any issue amicably.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori calls on all sons and daughters of Warri and the Delta State at large to unite for development and peace. Delta belongs to all of us, and only through cooperation, tolerance, and mutual respect can we build the state of our dreams.
