The PFA Player of the Year award going to Bruno Fernandes ahead of Declan Rice has officially opened one of the biggest football debates.

Bruno is the obvious winner when it comes to Goals, assists, creativity, leadership and the ability to decide games. He has been Manchester United’s engine and their biggest attacking influence.

Declan Rice has been phenomenal. He gives Arsenal control, defensive stability, ball progression, physicality and big-game performances. If midfield dominance is the measure, how did Rice lose?

Bruno Fernandes brings creativity and end product. Declan Rice brings control, balance and dominance meaning that one is the creator-in-chief and the other is the midfield general.

Should the PFA Player of the Year be awarded to the player with the best overall influence, or the player with the biggest numbers and match-winning moments?

What an ending to Portugal vs Croatia! Seriously, this is why the World Cup is different. πŸ‘‡

The referee had given 10 minutes of stoppage time. With the game tied 1-1, GonΓ§alo Ramos scored in the 90+4’ to make it 2-1 Portugal.

So stoppage time kept going, and going, and going.

90+12’. Croatia send a ball into the box. MatanoviΔ‡ seems to get a touch?, the ball falls to PaΕ‘aliΔ‡, he sets up Gvardiol... GOAL, 2-2! Absolute madness.

But then...

VAR called the referee over. There was a tiny touch. It changed everything: offside!

Goal disallowed. Portugal beat Croatia 2-1.

Cristiano goes on. Modrić does not.

Cristiano’s dream is still alive with Portugal. For ModriΔ‡, and for part of Croatia’s golden generation, this may be the end.

Football can be cruel. But what a beautiful, addictive sport.
