Dr. Danlami Hayyo's achievement as Mandate Secretary for Education FCT from his swearing in date 12/09/2023 to 2nd January 2024.

When he was appointed the Mandate Secretary of Education in the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, Dr. Danlami Hayyo certainly was not the first to be so appointed. But within the few months he is piloting the affairs of the secretariat, Dr Hayyo has left no one in doubt that he knows his onion and he is determined to make a difference.
One maybe right to say that he came prepared or that he is a golden fish that has the Midas touch. Since assumption of office in September, the FCTA education mandate secretary has proven the I-can-do-spirit-and-make-a-difference. This he has shown to the world that with determination and focus, anything positive can be achieved.
At the 17th edition of the Annual Media Luncheon by the Education Secretariat, Hayyo rolled out the laudable achievements of his tenure so far as secretary for education. According to him, since his appointment, he has since hit the ground running in many areas which he attributed to his open-door policy. The secretary encouraged communication, feedback mechanism, accessibility as well as discussions about education concerns and issues.
The policy, Dr Hayyo submitted, has promoted an inclusive and supportive learning environment and has helped to remain effective and efficient in the fulfilment of his mandate.
The education sector in the FCT last year is marked by an array of notable achievements in various aspects, especially in training such as Continuous Capacity Building in the Education Sector. There are also Students Performance, Professional Development and encouraging innovative teaching techniques as well as incorporating new curriculum approaches, among other benefits.
Under his watch, the secretariat has made concerted efforts through regular training and retraining of teachers and staff with upgrading and updating their knowledge and skills in line with modern trends and technological advancement for improved teaching/learning thereby enhancing productivity outcomes.
Besides, there are also training of FCT SEB staff in London for British Educational Training Technology Show, BETT, international training on innovative/entrepreneurship, training of school librarians on e-library, training of Teachers in Computer Based Test (CBT); training and retraining of SEB staff on their various schedules for efficiency.
Also, the secretariat engaged in online training of 80 English teachers by the British Council; workshop training for PHE teachers on identifying talents in schools; training of 96. members of School Based Management Committee (SBMC): training on continuous quality assurance report writing. Others are training of ERC senior staff on 21st Century Performance Management System; training of FCT teachers from Early Childhood Care Development Education (ECCDE) to SS to foster media and information literacy skills; training of staff on effective learning for improved academic performance; foreign language training services by the French Language Unit of ERC.
There was also capacity building of a staff who represented Nigeria in South Korea for programme on Survey Analysis and Utilization of Education Statistics; training of all FCT secondary schools teachers on the use of FCTEMIS online platform to generate continuous assessment results: exceptional re-orientation training for 100 directorate cadre staff and school principals; training of 85 health teachers; training workshop on nutrition and food on annual operation plan; training of all gender desk officers.
There were training and retraining of over 6,179 teachers in collaboration with UBEC; training of 2 UBEB staff in China by Chinese Embassy; training and retraining of DQA staff on strengthening quality and functionality of education system in Nigeria; training of 6,042 girls and women in accelerated literacy in collaboration with EU/UNESCO; free computer based test training for 1268 youths JAMB candidates at DME and zonal offices.
There were training of 199 out of school children and 55 women in shoe making, paint production/decorations, hijab, snacks and traditional henna skill acquisition; training of over 70 women in digital entrepreneurship master class in partnership with I Dream Divas Touch;
continuous training of automobile technicians to facilitate youth empowerment; training of staff to enhance performance, productivity and efficiency; capacity building workshop on mindset innovation, acceptance, diffusion and promotion.
There were training of 30 youths on how to build their first web application;
training workshop for women in business through FCT City Library and Digital Marketing Master Class, to mention but a few.
Besides training, the secretariat extended its midas touch in the area of physical infrastructural development and educational facilities. There has been Improvement and provision of adequate infrastructure like classrooms, laboratories, libraries and recreational spaces in order to nurture well-rounded, successful students and ensure efficacy of the education system.
Others include construction of 108 classrooms, 64 VIP toilets, 11 boreholes, 7 school fences,1 administration block and 1 laboratory; rehabilitation of 277 classrooms, four laboratories,4 administration blocks ,3 boreholes and 1 girls hostel. Supply of school furniture and instructional materials in UBEB schools; provision of 15 boreholes to primary and junior secondary schools.
Under his watch, Hayyo engaged in educational collaborations with stakeholders and development partners; so as to foster innovative approaches to learning and maintain its robust collaboration with UBEC various local and international partners,
In the year under review, he said as regards sports, the Education Secretariat made the FCT Administration proud through its various outstanding achievements and awards. The schools, students and teachers have continued to use the platform to showcase their potential, remarkable ingenuity and dedication to excel in competitive landscape.
Government Secondary School, Apo emerged 1st in the boys category and Girls Secondary School, Dutse came 1st in the Girls category. School for the Gifted (SFG) Gwagwalada came 1st at the North Central Zonal Competition of the Nigerian Institute of Legislative Studies.
Government Day Secondary School, Dutse came 1st at the Chinese -Nigeria 2023 Annual Cultural Festival and was awarded a refrigerator. Government Secondary School, Karu won the 23rd Edition of Nestle Milo Secondary School Basketball Championship and will represent Nigeria at International School Sports Federation in China 2024.
FCT won a total of 27 medals and a trophy awarded to Army Day Junior Secondary School, Mogadishu Cantonment Asokoro who emerged overall best in the Cadet Category in the MTN National Athletics Championship.
At the National Technicians and Scientists (JETS) Competition 2023,
FCT through its science schools emerged 1st in the Free Choice Project Primary Category by Science Pilot School, Kwali.
FCT emerged 1st in Free Choice Junior Category by Junior School, Jikwoyi.
FCT emerged 1st in the Free Choice Project Senior Category by GSTC, Garki. FCT emerged Overall Best JETS Student. 3rd Position in the National Theme Project Award by GSTC, Garki. 1st Inter-State Quiz by GSSS, Pyakkassa. Government Secondary School, Karu emerged 5th in the World at the Coderina International Championship.
20 FCT teachers and 32 students from Chinese Assisted Primary School, Nyanya awarded scholarship by Chinese Embassy in Nigeria. Government Day Secondary School, Karu came 6th out of 54 countries in the Robotic Competition in Morroco.
He maintained the slogan of the Secretariat Education for All is the responsibility of all. Can one therefore not commend Dr. Danlami Hayyo for doing a great job and transforming the education secretariat into the pride of the FCTA?
