Genetically Modified Organism (GMO)
Some months ago, different people approached me to write about GMO, which the billionaire Bill Gates introduced. They wanted me to write about it in order to raise awareness among the public about what it entails. Some of these people don’t live in Nigeria, while others are Nigerians.
Their reasons for asking me to write about GMO were twofold. First, because they know I am a farmer, they feel it directly affects me. Second, because I have a large following on social media, Alhamdulillah, they believe my words about GMO would have an impact if I spoke on it.
Although some of them had already done their own research on GMO (from Bill Gates), I told them it would be difficult for me to write on such issues. This is because it requires research and verifiable facts, since there will always be people who challenge such discussions. And I am not a biotechnology expert—those are the people responsible for conducting research on GMO.
As far back as July, one of those who asked me to write told me that he discovered Bill Gates, through the Nigerian government, intends to use clerics and traditional rulers to promote GMO to farmers. And just yesterday, I came across an announcement confirming that the government indeed plans to use clerics to promote GMO.
Almost all those who previously contacted me said that, for years, Nigerian farmers have been using GMO, but that this particular one introduced by Bill Gates carries negative consequences for farmers, for citizens who consume the food, and for Nigeria’s economy as a whole. These matters require in-depth investigation by specialists—biotech experts, medical doctors, and economists.
Despite that, two issues about this Bill Gates GMO stood out to me, which I believe are the very reasons the government wants to use clerics to promote it to citizens.
No seed preservation: With the Bill Gates GMO, farmers cannot save seeds. Traditionally, when a farmer harvests crops, he reserves part of it as seed for the next planting season. This is not possible with Bill Gates’ GMO. Once you plant it, it cannot be replanted. You will always have to buy new seeds whenever you want to farm. In short, it puts you under control, making you a regular customer.
Soil dependency on chemicals: In this type of Bill Gates GMO, there are chemicals that, once absorbed by your farmland, no other seed can grow there except Bill Gates’ GMO seeds. For example, if you planted GMO maize this year and wanted to plant soybeans next year, you would be forced to buy Bill Gates’ GMO soybeans—otherwise nothing else would grow.
These points I gathered only from those who asked me to write about the dangers of GMO in our society. Therefore, I cannot confirm them as facts. But I did see our brothers and sisters in the South resisting this GMO on X (Twitter), and I even saw a short film they produced there highlighting its dangers.
Our greatest call is for experts and stakeholders to help us investigate this Bill Gates GMO, and clearly present both its benefits and its harms (if any). Because if what those people told me is true, then surely our community will be harmed, and Northern Nigeria will regress in agriculture.
May Allah protect us all.
