Things Fall Apart: Nigeria Risks Losing Another Rising Star to South Africa

Nigeria may be on the verge of losing yet another promising football talent—this time to continental rivals South Africa.
Nigeria-born defender Ime Okon, who plies his trade with Hannover 96 in Germany, has been named in South Africa’s provisional 54-man squad for the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations set to take place in Morocco next month.

The announcement was made on Monday by Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos, who has been actively widening his talent pool ahead of the tournament. Okon’s inclusion is a clear signal of South Africa’s interest in securing the allegiance of the versatile defender, who is eligible to represent both Nigeria and South Africa.

Okon, born to Nigerian parents but raised partly in South Africa, has been on the radar of both nations. His rise in the German league has not gone unnoticed—his composure on the ball, aerial dominance, and tactical intelligence have earned him plaudits despite his young age.

For Nigeria, the situation raises familiar concerns. Over the years, the Super Eagles have lost several dual-eligible players to other national teams due to delayed engagement or lack of early integration. With AFCON approaching and defensive depth a major talking point for the Nigerian national team, Okon’s potential switch could be a significant blow.

South Africa, meanwhile, sees the 96-based defender as a long-term asset—part of their effort to rebuild a competitive squad capable of challenging the continent’s elite.

As the tournament draws closer, all eyes will be on Okon’s final decision. Will he wear the green and gold of Bafana Bafana—or will Nigeria step in to reclaim one of their own? Another Opportunity to get them to lose points, they'll never learn
