DW Drums, also known as Drum Workshop, was founded in 1972 by Don Lombardi. Lombardi, who was just 26 years old at the time, started the company as a teaching studio in Santa Monica, California.

Don Lombardi's passion for drums began when he was 9 years old, and he started teaching others soon after. John Good, who would become a pivotal figure in DW's success, was one of Lombardi's early students and later became DW's Senior Executive Vice President and COO.
