VIDEO: Senator Samuel Anyanwu appreciates Wike as he resumes’ duties as the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the party's national secretariat, following a Supreme Court verdict in his favor.

This development comes after a long-standing battle for the position, which had been contested by Sunday Udeh-Okoye, the party's National Youth Leader.

Anyanwu's return to office was marked by his expression of gratitude to FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, for his unwavering support throughout the ordeal. Despite the Appeal Court's earlier ruling in favor of Udeh-Okoye, Anyanwu had remained defiant, insisting on his right to the position.

The PDP had been embroiled in a leadership crisis, with the National Working Committee (NWC) and the party's governors affirming Udeh-Okoye as the authentic National Secretary. However, the Supreme Court's verdict has now settled the dispute in Anyanwu's favor

Rivers Emergency Rule; Tinubu, Akpabio, Others Dragged To Court

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, along with other top officials including Akpabio, have been taken to court over the state of emergency declared in Rivers State. The lawsuit, filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, contests the removal of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, the Deputy Governor, and members of the State House of Assembly.

The plaintiffs are seeking a court ruling on the legitimacy of the emergency declaration, which has sparked widespread controversy. The crisis in Rivers State has been escalating for months, fueled by a long-standing rift between Governor Fubara and lawmakers loyal to Wike.

The National Assembly has already endorsed the emergency rule, with the House of Representatives passing the proclamation through a voice vote. However, the lawsuit aims to challenge the constitutionality of the President's actions.

The South-South Governors have just appealed to President Bola Tinubu to reconsider his decision and rescind the state of emergency declared in Rivers State. According to them, "the moment for dialogue is now," emphasizing the need for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing crisis.

This development comes amid the escalating tensions between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, as well as the federal government's involvement. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo had earlier advised Governor Fubara to take firm control of the situation, while Rotimi Amaechi, former governor of Rivers State, has mobilized Nigerians against the state of emergency, calling it an "illegal power grab" by President Tinubu.

The South-South Governors' appeal for dialogue highlights the urgent need for a peaceful and diplomatic solution to the crisis, rather than relying on emergency measures. Will President Tinubu heed their call, or will the situation continue to escalate?

RIVERS EMERGENCY RULE: The National Assembly is reportedly considering using a voice vote to approve the President's proclamation on the Rivers State emergency rule, due to a stalemate over achieving a two-thirds majority. This move comes as the Assembly struggles to garner the required two-thirds majority to approve the proclamation.

In parliamentary procedures, a two-thirds majority is typically required for important decisions, such as suspending or changing a rule, closing or limiting debate, or preventing the consideration of a motion. However, in this case, the Assembly is exploring alternative voting methods to overcome the impasse.

Rivers Assembly Backs State Of Emergency

The Rivers State House of Assembly has thrown its weight behind President Bola Tinubu's declaration of a state of emergency in the state, citing the prolonged political crisis that has plagued the state for over a year.

In a statement issued by the Assembly's Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, the lawmakers also condemned the suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara's "despotic and tyrannical actions." These actions include his repeated disregard for court judgments and orders, failure to govern in accordance with his oath of office, and unconstitutional obstruction of the legislative arm of government, which ultimately sparked the crisis .

This development comes after President Tinubu suspended Fubara, his deputy, and all elected members of the state House of Assembly for six months, effective March 18, 2025. The President also appointed Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Rtd) as the Administrator to oversee the state's affairs .

*Edo/Rivers; How Obaseki misruled in Edo under Buhari and the Fubara miscalculation under Tinubu*

By; Chris Osa Uhunmwangho

The current debate surrounding President Tinubu's declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State bears a striking resemblance to a similar situation that unfolded in Edo State during Godwin Obaseki's tenure as governor. In that instance, Obaseki notoriously deprived 14 constituencies of representation for four years by refusing to swear in duly elected assembly members.

Obaseki's actions were not only unconstitutional but also brazenly defended by him on national television. He employed schemes like removing the house of assembly roof under the guise of renovation to prevent the members from being sworn in. What's more alarming is that Obaseki enjoyed the support of key figures in the Buhari administration, making it impossible for the elected assembly members to take their rightful seats.

This blatant disregard for democracy and the rule of law was only possible because of the unseen alleged implicit backing of President Buhari at the time. Fast forward to the present, Governor Fubara is facing the consequences of attempting to replicate Obaseki's actions in Rivers State. However, Fubara underestimated the difference in leadership style between Buhari and Tinubu.

President Tinubu's declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, as authorized by the 1999 Constitution, highlights the consequences of such actions. The situation serves as a reminder that the rule of law and democratic principles must be upheld, and leaders must be held accountable for their actions.

In his declaration, President Tinubu suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy for six months,. The president also appointed Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Rtd) as Administrator to oversee the affairs of the state.

This move marks a significant departure from the handling of similar situations in the past, particularly during President Buhari's administration. The declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State sends a strong message that the current administration will not tolerate blatant disregard for democratic principles and the rule of law.

PRESS RELEASE

BY THE EXECUTIVE GOVERNOR OF RIVERS STATE

My dear Rivers People,

I address you today with a deep sense of responsibility and calm, as we navigate this unfortunate moment in our state’s political history.

Since assuming office as your Governor, all my actions and decisions have been guided by my constitutional oath of office and a great sense of duty.

We prioritized the protection of lives and property and ensured the continuous progress of our dear State.

Even in the face of the political impasse, we have remained committed to constitutional order and the rule of law, putting the interest of our people above all else.

This was why, immediately after Mr. President’s intervention to broker peace, we did not hesitate to implement the agreed terms in good faith, including welcoming back commissioners who had previously resigned on their own volition.

Furthermore, we moved swiftly to comply with the Supreme Court's judgement immediately we received the certified true copy of the judgement to return the state to normalcy.

These steps were taken not for personal gains but to foster peace, unity and stability in our dear State.

Unfortunately, at every turn, members of the Rivers State House of Assembly frustrated our efforts, thus making genuine peace and progress difficult.

Our priorities remained the security of lives and property and advancing the well-being and prosperity of Rivers people.

Yes, we have political disagreements, but good governance had continued, salaries have been paid, and great projects were being executed to move the State forward. Above all, Rivers State is safe, secure and peaceful under our watch.

At this critical time, I urge all Rivers people to remain peaceful and law-abiding. We will engage with all relevant institutions to ensure that our democracy remains strong and that Rivers State continues to thrive.

We have always been a resilient people, and we will face this situation with wisdom, patience, and unwavering faith in the democratic process.

God bless Rivers State. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Sir, Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS
