Terror in Ebonyi: Fulani Herdsmen Attack Nkaleha Community, Kill Worshippers in Church

The people of Nkaleha in Ebonyi State are reeling in shock and grief after Fulani herdsmen launched a deadly attack on Amagu community on Sunday, February 2, 2025. More than 30 people lost their lives in the bloodbath, including six worshippers and their Pastor who were brutally murdered inside the Lord’s Chosen Church.

For the victims, it was meant to be a peaceful Sunday of worship, but their prayers were silenced by the deafening sound of gunfire. "We were in the middle of prayers when we heard the first shot. At first, we thought it was something else—until more gunshots followed, and people started screaming," recalled a survivor, his voice trembling.

The attackers showed no mercy. As worshippers scrambled for safety, bullets cut them down. Blood stained the church floor, a haunting reminder of the violence that had shattered the community. "They shot them right inside the church," said another witness, barely able to hold back tears. "People ran, but where could they go? They were trapped."

Nkaleha shares a boundary with Ehamufu, a neighbouring community that has endured similar attacks since 2019. Now, fear has taken hold. Many in Ehamufu have fled their homes, terrified that their village could be next.

"This is not the first time, and it won’t be the last if nothing is done," lamented a local elder. "We are living in fear. Our people are being killed, and the authorities are watching."

The attack on a place of worship, a supposed sanctuary of peace, has left many questioning the state of security in Nigeria. As families mourn their loved ones, one question echoes across the community—how many more must die before something is done?
