We honor the sacrifices of those who fought for our democracy, and we acknowledge the progress we've made so far. June 12 in the History of Nigeria honors the democratic election of MKO Abiola and acknowledges the sacrifices made during Nigeria's journey to democracy

As we aim to promote unity, truth, justice, and peace, reflecting on the country's democratic progress since the return to civil rule in 1999
we must also recognize the challenges that lie ahead and work together to build a brighter future for all Nigerians.

A CONCISE HISTORY OF JUNE 12 IN NIGERIA (A REASON FOR THE CELEBRATION OF JUNE 12 AS A DEMOCRACY DAY IN NIGERIA)

Nigeria made June 12 a day for the celebration of Democracy Day to commemorate the annulled presidential election of June 12, 1993, widely regarded as one of the country's freest and fairest polls.

This election was won by Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, but it was wrongly canceled by the Ibrahim Babangida junta.

Abiola's victory marked a significant moment in Nigeria's democratic history, and his legacy has become a symbol of the country's struggle for democracy.

Reasons for June 12

1) Commemoration of Abiola's Election of June 12 honors the democratic election of MKO Abiola and acknowledges the sacrifices made during Nigeria's journey to democracy.

2) Shift from May 29: Previously, Democracy Day was celebrated on May 29, marking the handover of power to an elected civilian government in 1999.

3) However, in 2018, President Muhammadu Buhari declared June 12 as the new Democracy Day to recognize Abiola's contribution to Nigeria's democracy.

4) Promoting Unity and Democracy: By celebrating June 12, the Nigerian government aims to promote unity, truth, justice, and peace, reflecting on the country's democratic progress since the return to civil rule in 1999
