NIGERIA PLANE HIJACKED 1993π³π¬
On October 25, 1993, four Nigerian teenagers - Richard Ogunderu, 19, Kabir Adenuga, Benneth Oluwadaisi, and Kenny Rasaq-Lawal, ages 16 to 18 - hijacked a Nigerian Airways Airbus A310 flight from Lagos to Abuja. The teens, claiming to represent the Movement for the Advancement of Democracy (MAD), took 193 passengers hostage, including top government officials and China's Vice President Rong Yiren.
THE HIJACKING
The hijackers, armed with toy guns, seized control of the plane mid-air, announcing their takeover to the passengers. They demanded the restoration of democracy in Nigeria, specifically the recognition of M.K.O. Abiola as the country's rightful leader, following the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election.
DEMANDS AND NEGOTIATIONS
The hijackers outlined their demands on flyers, including
- RESIGNATION OF THE MILITARY GOVERNMENT: They wanted the military-backed government to step down.
- RECOGNITION OF M.K.O. Abiola: They demanded that Abiola be sworn in as the country's president.
- RETURN OF EMBEZZLED FUNDS: They asked the government to return allegedly embezzled money to the state.
- REOPENING OF CLOSED INSTITUTIONS They demanded the reopening of closed newspaper companies and universities.
The hijackers released 129 hostages, including women, children, and some government officials, but refused to give up the crew and Nigerian government workers. They threatened to set the plane on fire within 72 hours if their demands weren't met.
RESCUE OPERATION
After three days, Nigerian authorities stormed the plane, leading to a violent confrontation. One crew member, Ethel Igwe, was killed, and several others were injured, including Richard Ogunderu. The hijackers were arrested, cuffed, and taken to prisonπ³π¬π³π¬
