Akure Unveils N200M Online Banking, Business Empowerment Scheme In Yagba West

The Toyosi Akure Foundation has announced the launch of a N200 million online banking and business empowerment initiative aimed at supporting start-ups and small businesses in the Yagba West Constituency of Kogi State.

The Mega Empowerment program is scheduled to be officially launched on May 15, 2025, and will focus on expanding financial inclusion and enhancing business capacity for entrepreneurs within the constituency.

Dr. Toyosi Akure, the Founder and Chairman of the Foundation, disclosed this in a statement made available to Middlebelt.ng on Sunday via an online chat.

According to him, the scheme is designed to empower small-scale business owners and start-up operators who face challenges in accessing traditional financing and digital banking services.

“This initiative is a strategic investment in the future of our people. We are creating opportunities for start-ups and small businesses to thrive through accessible loans, digital literacy, and entrepreneurial training,” he said.

He added that the Foundation will work with online financial platforms and grassroots banking institutions to ensure effective disbursement, monitoring, and support for all beneficiaries.

Dr. Akure noted that the programme forms part of the Foundation’s broader mission to drive grassroots development, tackle unemployment, and promote self-reliance among youths and women in Kogi State.

He assured that beneficiaries would undergo tailored training in digital banking, financial management, and business sustainability to ensure responsible loan usage and long-term impact.

The official launch event will hold at the Tobiloba Hall and Event Centre, Egbe and is expected to attract key stakeholders from the public and private sectors, including government officials, financial experts, and community leaders.

Middlebelt.ng reports that the Toyosi Akure Foundation has consistently contributed to socioeconomic development in Kogi State, particularly in the areas of education, health, youth empowerment, and rural infrastructure.

Yagba West LG Debunks Report of Protest, Demands Retraction, Apology

The Yagba West Local Government Council in Kogi State has refuted claims circulating on social media alleging that women in Oke-Ere community staged a half-naked protest over rising insecurity in the area.

The council described the report, published on April 9 by online news outlet akelicious.net, as “entirely false, lacking journalistic integrity, and a deliberate misrepresentation of facts.”

In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Local Government Chairman, Mr. Adeyemi Babarinde Sunday, the council clarified that no protest of any kind took place in Oke-Ere or any part of Yagba West.

He explained that what occurred was a traditional spiritual procession conducted by elderly women of the community—a revered cultural rite aimed at invoking rainfall to aid the farming season.

“As a matter of divine affirmation, rain indeed fell yesterday shortly after the rite was observed, validating the spiritual intent and solemnity of the ceremony,” the statement said.

The council expressed deep concern over what it termed “reckless and sensationalist journalism,” alleging that the report by akelicious.net was intended to incite fear and instability in the area.

“It is reprehensible that a sacred cultural observance was twisted into a false narrative of protest and insecurity,” Mr. Babarinde stated, adding that such actions amount to “an affront to tradition and an insult to the intelligence of our people.”

The council further accused those behind the report of attempting to score cheap political points through misinformation, labeling them as “political jobbers and frustrated individuals” seeking to disrupt the peace of the local government area.

Mr. Babarinde emphasized that Yagba West remains peaceful and that the local administration, in collaboration with security agencies and community leaders, is making steady progress in maintaining law and order.

He also decried the lack of journalistic diligence in the report, noting that no efforts were made to interview the women involved in the procession or verify the claims.

The council has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to akelicious.net to retract the publication and issue a public apology. Failure to comply, it warned, would prompt legal action for defamation and incitement.

“We call on all media platforms to uphold ethical standards and ensure accuracy in reporting. Yagba West deserves better. The truth deserves better,” the statement concluded.

The building served as a getaway coven for Lord Lugard and his Mistress, Flora Shaw.
