When Influence Succeeds Where Force Failed

For years, governments at different levels in Nigeria tried to enforce monthly sanitation through police checkpoints, movement restrictions, shop closures, and other coercive measures. Yet the results often fell short of expectations.

Today, the RATEL Movement is achieving what force could not. Through the moral authority and civic influence of , citizens are voluntarily participating in community sanitation exercises. No force. No intimidation. Just conviction, ownership, and a shared commitment to improving society.

This is one of the core ideas captured in my book, “” — that true societal transformation does not begin with coercion, but with awakened citizenship, moral courage, and collective responsibility.

The lesson is clear: people can be compelled by power, but they are transformed by influence.
