NCPWD DONATES SUN-PROTECTION AND SELF-CARE ITEMS TO CHILDREN WITH ALBINISM TO SUPPORT INCLUSIVE EDUCATION

The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities [NCPWD] has donated assistive and sun-protection items to children with albinism as part of efforts to promote equal and unhindered access to quality education in Nigeria.

The Executive Secretary of NCPWD, Hon. Ayuba Burki Gufwan, made the presentation on Wednesday, 9th September 2026, while receiving a delegation from the Women and Girls with Albinism Network [WGWAN], parents and children with albinism, on a courtesy visit to the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Hon. Gufwan reaffirmed that inclusive education is a fundamental right guaranteed under both national and international frameworks. He stated that NCPWD remains committed to dismantling barriers that prevent children with disabilities from learning.

> “We are committed to ensuring that every child with a disability has access to education. There is always ability in disability, and no child should be left behind because of their condition. I urge our children with albinism to study hard, remain focused, and know that the Commission stands with you,” the Executive Secretary said.

In her remarks, the Executive Director of WGWAN, Miss Constance Onyemaechi, said the visit was aimed at forging a strategic partnership with NCPWD to advance inclusive education for children with albinism.

Miss Onyemaechi highlighted WGWAN’s ongoing project in Kurudu Community, FCT, which focuses on strengthening community-based inclusive education for neurodivergent children and children with albinism.

She also appealed for the Commission’s support for a proposed workshop for teachers and school administrators, requesting technical expertise and resource persons to equip educators with skills to support learners with diverse needs.

> “Every child deserves a learning environment where they are understood, respected, supported, and given the opportunity to reach their full potential,” Miss Onyemaechi said.

Also speaking, the Head of the Assistive Devices and Technology Unit at NCPWD, Dr. Ismail Idris emphasized the critical role of assistive devices in enabling access to education for persons with disabilities. He noted that without appropriate support, many learners are excluded from full participation in the classroom.

Dr. Idris further appreciated the ECOWAS Commission for its donation of assistive devices, which has enabled NCPWD to distribute resources to persons with disabilities based on identified needs.

Highlights of the donation presented by the Executive Secretary include:
1. 5 cartons of Sunscreen
2. 40 Wide-Brim Hats
3. 40 Pairs of UV Protective Sleeves

Both NCPWD and WGWAN expressed commitment to collaborate in making inclusive education a practical reality for all persons with disabilities across Nigeria.

The Commission reiterated that partnerships with Civil Society Organizations and Organizations of Persons with Disabilities such as WGWAN are central to achieving the mandate of the _Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018_, particularly in the areas of education, health, and social inclusion.

The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), Chief Ayuba Burki Gufwan, has expressed profound sorrow and extended his heartfelt sympathies to the Lalu family, in Mangun, Mangu LGA, over the passing of their beloved son and brother, Mr. Gayus David Lalu, who transited at the age of 55.

In a condolence message issued on Wednesday, Chief Burki described the sudden demise of Mr. Gayus as a devastating and shocking development. He noted that the tragic loss has undeniably cast a dark cloud of grief over the Lalu family, creating an immense void that will be profoundly difficult to fill.

Acknowledging the heavy emotional toll of the loss, the NCPWD boss urged Hon. Ishaya Lalu, Hon. James Lalu, and the entire bereaved family to draw strength from their faith. He emphasized that while the pain of losing a sibling is immeasurable, it remains necessary to submit to the will of the Almighty during such unforeseen tragedies.

Chief Burki further offered fervent prayers, asking God to help the family navigate through this incredibly difficult and trying moment. He prayed earnestly for the peaceful repose of the deceased's soul, beseeching the Almighty to grant Mr. Gayus eternal rest and to wrap the grieving family in divine comfort.

NCPWD AND DISCOVERING ABILITY IN DISABILITY INITIATIVE SIGN MOU TO DEVELOP PWDs REALITY SHOW

The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Discovering Ability in Disability Initiative to develop talents within the Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) community through a reality TV show, entertainment, and media platforms.

The partnership is premised on the belief that disability does not negate ability. Persons with disabilities are creative and endowed with gifts and talents that deserve national and global platforms for expression.

The Executive Secretary of NCPWD, Hon. Ayuba Gufwan said the MoU on behalf of the Commission. He described the development as commendable and a significant step towards inclusion.

According to him, “This is a welcome development and a demonstration of the commitment of friends and partners to the PWD community. The greatest need of the estimated 35 million Persons with Disabilities in Nigeria is not only about having ability or not but getting a veritable platform to showcase their talents across various fields.”

He added that the MoU represents a window of opportunity for more partners to collaborate with the Commission in creating avenues for PWDs to showcase what they are capable of to the world.

In his words: “This development brings great joy to the Commission. It demonstrates the belief of our partner in the immense talents within the PWD community and their resolve to ensure these talents are showcased. This is a commendable effort that should not be taken lightly. I urge Persons with Disabilities to seize this opportunity and prove to the world the abundance of talent in our community. For us at the Commission, we hope this partnership will open doors for more collaborations.”

Also speaking, the founder of Discovering Ability in Disability Initiative, Mr. Steve Rodstick Ezeh said signing of the MoU marks the beginning of a new chapter for reality TV and show business featuring Persons with Disabilities.

In the same vein, the Director of Social Integration at NCPWD, Mr. Lawrence Idemudia noted that the agreement will elevate the participation and visibility of PWDs in the entertainment industry.

He stated that with the signing of the MoU, the journey towards a vibrant partnership for the development of PWDs has begun in earnest.

NCPWD Executive Secretary Celebrates International Youth Day 2026, Calls for Collective Action Under Renewed Hope Agenda

On the occasion of International Youth Day 2026, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), Chief Ayuba Burki Gufwan, has issued a passionate appeal for inclusive development, reaffirming the Commission’s unwavering commitment to Nigerian youth with disabilities. Under the United Nations theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” Chief Burki emphasized that while the lived realities of young Nigerians with disabilities are shaped by unique systemic and environmental barriers, their dreams of self-reliance, dignity, and meaningful participation are universally shared and must be met with concrete action.

Acknowledging the United Nations’ focus on interconnected barriers, Chief Burki drew attention to the acute challenges facing young persons with disabilities across Nigeria, particularly in the realms of inclusive education, accessible employment, and digital literacy. He noted that climate induced displacement and infrastructural deficits further compound these vulnerabilities, especially for youth in rural and underserved communities. However, he stressed that these obstacles are not insurmountable; rather, they represent shared challenges that demand a cohesive national response, one that bridges policy gaps with practical, on-the-ground implementation. In this regard, he affirmed that the NCPWD, under his leadership, is working diligently to address these very challenges, fully aligned with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prioritizes social inclusion, economic empowerment, and equitable access for all Nigerians.

In aligning with the global emphasis on solidarity and vulnerable regions, Chief Burki stressed that inclusion is not the sole responsibility of the NCPWD but a collective duty of every citizen, government agency, private institution, and community. He commended recent strides in assistive technology procurement and the gradual rollout of accessible public infrastructure. Chief Burki asserted that while tangible improvements have been recorded nationally in awareness, policy frameworks, and service delivery for youths with disabilities, much more remains to be done especially in enforcement, funding, and attitudinal change to bridge the gap between policy and lived reality.

Chief Burki celebrated the remarkable ingenuity of young Nigerians with disabilities who continue to pioneer practical, creative solutions under resource constrained condition, from adaptive agricultural tools to assistive digital applications. He urged all stakeholders to actively invest in these grassroots innovations and foster an ecosystem where talent thrives unhindered. He called on every Nigerian to embrace inclusion as a personal and national duty. Only through shared responsibility, he said, can the nation transform common aspirations into shared, tangible victories for every young Nigerian, regardless of ability.

MINISTER OF HUMANITARIAN AFFAIRS AND POVERTY REDUCTION ENDORSES NCPWD FARM CITIES PROJECTS

The Honourable Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard Doro has pledged full support for the establishment of National Farm Cities for Persons with Disabilities being promoted by the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) in partnership with the Peace for Humanity Foundation.

The Minister gave the assurance on Thursday during a courtesy visit by the Executive Secretary of NCPWD, Hon. Ayuba Gufwan, who led the management team of the Commission and representatives of the Peace for Humanity Foundation to the Ministry.

Describing the initiative as "timely and transformative," the Minister said the Farm Cities Project aligns perfectly with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Ministry’s mandate of poverty reduction and social inclusion.

“This is a laudable project. It is an initiative that everyone interested in uplifting Persons with Disabilities in this country should support and work towards its success,” the Minister stated.

“I will study the progress report and project documents submitted to identify specific areas where the Ministry can intervene to expedite progress. We will engage further with the Commission and the Peace for Humanity Foundation to address grey areas and position the Ministry as a strong advocate for the project.”

He further disclosed that once the necessary adjustments are made, the Ministry will within the next one month develop a clear policy document for presentation to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to fast-track approval and mobilization of funds.

“I will not let this project die under my watch. All processes, procedures, and lapses identified will be addressed, especially since the project is still at an early stage,” he added.

The Minister also noted that the project’s adoption by the Council on Humanitarian Affairs in Calabar in January 2026 demonstrates national readiness for its implementation.

Earlier, the Executive Secretary of NCPWD, Hon. Ayuba Gufwan said the visit was to brief the Minister on the progress made so far and to seek the Ministry’s support for the rollout of Farm Cities across the 36 states and the FCT.

He explained that the Farm City is a disability-inclusive agro-industrial community where Persons with Disabilities can live, learn, and work with dignity through accessible housing, vocational training, agro-processing, healthcare, and enterprise development.

“The goal is to take Persons with Disabilities off the streets and equip them with skills and opportunities to become self-reliant,” Hon. Gufwan said.

He noted that with over 35 million Persons with Disabilities in Nigeria, many of whom are women and children facing unemployment and poverty, the project directly supports the Ministry’s mandate of creating jobs and sustainable livelihoods.

“The Commission is therefore requesting the Honourable Minister’s endorsement and leadership to: present a memo on the Farm Cities Project to FEC for national approval and budgetary support, collaborate with relevant Ministries to mobilize resources, and support the planned formal launch of the project,” he added.

Also speaking, the President of Peace for Humanity Foundation, Dr. Thompson Udoh said the project has received approval from the Council on Humanitarian Affairs and has secured the commitment of the Nasarawa State Government to host the pilot Farm City for the North Central Zone

“We have also constituted a Local Organizing Committee (LOC) to coordinate the project nationwide. The next steps are the inauguration of a National Steering Committee and the formal launch of the Renewed Hope Farm Cities Project for Persons with Disabilities,” Dr. Udoh concluded.

The Farm Cities Project aims to create thousands of jobs for PWDs and caregivers, reduce poverty, enhance food security, and serve as a national model for disability-inclusive development.

NCPWD Pledges Technical Support to Sauri Growth Initiatives for Women, Youth with Disabilities

The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), Hon. Ayuba Burki Gufwan, has pledged the Commission’s collaboration and technical support to Sauri Growth Initiatives for Women and Youth with Disabilities in the implementation of programmes aimed at empowering and including women and youth with disabilities.

Hon. Gufwan gave the assurance on Tuesday when the Founder of Sauri Growth Initiatives, Miss Comfort Ekwo, led a delegation on a courtesy visit to the Commission’s Headquarters in Abuja.

The Executive Secretary reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to working with credible organizations whose vision aligns with its mandate of promoting inclusion, accessibility, equal opportunities, and the full participation of persons with disabilities in national development.

He commended Miss Ekwo for her dedication and passion in advancing the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities and encouraged the organization to remain steadfast in its advocacy efforts.

“The Commission is willing to provide technical support and explore areas of partnership that will improve the lives of women and youth with disabilities across the country,” Hon. Gufwan stated.

Earlier in her remarks, Miss Ekwo said the purpose of the visit was to seek collaborative support to advance disability inclusion in Nigeria.

She commended NCPWD for its remarkable efforts in promoting inclusive policies and programmes for persons with disabilities and reaffirmed her organization’s commitment to working closely with the Commission.

Miss Ekwo outlined the objectives of the visit to include:
1. Building a strong and sustainable partnership between Sauri Growth Initiatives and the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities.
2. Seeking the Commission’s technical support in implementing programmes and initiatives that promote the empowerment and inclusion of women and youth with disabilities.
3. Expressing appreciation to the Commission for its leadership and unwavering commitment to advocating for disability inclusion and the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities across Nigeria.

NCPWD Empowers Special Needs Children at NAFOWA School Airport Road with Assistive Devices

The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has concluded a two-day intensive intervention at the NAFOWA Special Needs School, Nigerian Air Force Base, Airport Road, Abuja.

At the end of the two - day intervention program, the Commission empowered the Children with Special Needs with assistive devices to aid them in their educational development.

The intervention involved assessment, prescription, fitting, and the donation of assistive devices to pupils with disabilities.

Describing assistive devices as critical tools of empowerment, the Commission stated that the devices improve communication, enhance mobility, support independent living, and remove barriers to quality education and full participation in society.

According to the Commission, the intervention aligns with the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018, and NCPWD’s commitment to advancing inclusive education in Nigeria.

Representing the Commission, Dr. Kehinde Ogunbiyitan, Head of the Education Unit, reaffirmed the Commission’s mandate to promote the rights, inclusion, and dignity of persons with disabilities nationwide.
He said:
“Today’s event is about more than the donation of assistive devices. It is about creating opportunities and ensuring that every child, regardless of disability, has the chance to learn, grow, and achieve their full potential."

Dr. Ogunbiyitan added, "Inclusion is not an act of charity — it is a matter of rights, equity, and justice. Every child deserves the opportunity to participate, succeed, and contribute meaningfully to society.”

The Commission further emphasized that achieving disability inclusion requires collaboration among government, development partners, civil society, the private sector, and communities.

Mrs. Aisha Ramallan, Vice President, NAFOWA, applauded the Commission for its unwavering support to the school.

She noted that the NAFOWA Special Needs School, under the Nigerian Air Force Officers’ Wives Association, provides specialized education, therapy, and support services for children with disabilities in an inclusive learning environment.

Dr. Ismail Idris, Head of Assistive Devices and Technology Unit in the Commission, said education is a right, not a privilege. His words. "When we remove physical and learning barriers through assistive technology, we unlock the full potential of these children. NCPWD will continue to partner with institutions like NAFOWA to make schools truly inclusive.”

He commended the teachers, therapists, caregivers, and parents for their dedication, noting that “your efforts continue to transform lives and create opportunities for these children.”

Mrs. Semble Olanrewaju, School Supervisor/NAFOWA National Head of Programs, expressed gratitude on behalf of the school. She said,
“It is with great pleasure that we received these assistive devices. NAFOWA will continue to provide adequate support to ensure a conducive and enabling environment where pupils can achieve their academic goals and reach their full potential, regardless of disability.”

The Head Teacher, Mrs. Grace Odeleye, also commending the Commission, appreciated the empowerment gesture from the Commission, stating that the donation will help address the challenge of inadequate assistive devices for the children.

Earlier on Day 1, the Commission’s team of physiotherapists led by Dr. Ismail Idris and Dr. Aisha Ali, Head of Health and Rehabilitation, conducted assessments.

They identified conditions including Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Intellectual Disability, Autism, and Hearing Impairment, and prescribed devices tailored to each child’s individual needs.

On behalf of the Executive Secretary and Management of NCPWD, the Commission reaffirmed its commitment to working with partners like NAFOWA to expand access to quality education, assistive technology, and opportunities for persons with disabilities across Nigeria in line with its commitment to build a nation where no child is left behind and where inclusion becomes the norm.
