Senator Dafinone Empowers Delta Central Farmers Through Agricultural Training

In a determined effort to boost food security and agricultural productivity in Delta Central, Senator Ede Dafinone has launched a two-day Agriculture and Food Security Training and Empowerment Programme at the PTI Conference Centre, Effurun, Delta State. The initiative, organized in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, is aimed at equipping farmers with modern techniques to improve crop yield and sustainability.

Delivering the welcome address on behalf of Senator Ede Dafinone, Olorogun Ejemudiaro Salubi, Head of Projects in the senator’s office, reiterated that agriculture remains a key driver of economic growth. He stated that the programme is part of the senator’s constituency capital projects, designed to empower women and youth with essential farming skills to enhance food production and self-sufficiency.

The first day of the training, themed "Pest Resistance Vegetables: Tomatoes, Pepper, Maize, and Groundnuts," focused on equipping farmers with techniques to combat pest infestations and maximize productivity. Master Trainers from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture provided in-depth lectures on best agricultural practices and effective pest management strategies.

Mr. Obasi Sunday, a Master Trainer, led the session on "Production Protocol of Tomato, Hot Pepper, and Sweet Pepper," educating farmers on seed preparation, soil management, irrigation, and pest control. Mrs. T. Adeshola followed with a detailed presentation on okra farming, highlighting modern techniques to improve yield and resistance to pests.

Similarly, Mrs. Olabisi Oladele discussed "Profitable Groundnut Production and Major Pest Challenges," offering insights into disease control measures and soil fertility management. Mrs. Raheem Adejoke Arike educated farmers on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) for maize production, stressing the importance of crop rotation, soil testing, and organic farming.

Prophet arrested for allegedly d£filing minor in Ogun State: A 38-year-old Cherubim and Seraphin prophet, Abimbolu Oliwafemi, has been arrested for allegedly d£filing a 14-year-old girl.



The mother of the victim had approached men of the Ijebu Igbo divisional police station that the cleric had deceived her into believing he could perform a spiritual bath to prevent future misfortunes but instead, he reportedly sexu@lly ass@ulted her daughter by a river in the afternoon around 2:00 PM.



The Ogun State Police Command's gender department quickly apprehended the suspect and arranged for a medical examination at Medicare Hospital in Ijebu Igbo, providing necessary documentation for evidence collection.



Confirming the arrest, the spokesperson of the command, CSP Omolola Ofutola, said an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances that allowed a self-proclaimed prophet to engage in unlawful relations with a minor, whose mother is also a member of his church, which has a congregation of about one hundred.



“Responses gathered from the child's mother during the police inquiry highlight her apparent lack of awareness and naivety, as she entrusted her daughter's care to a deceitful prophet. ‘Small Lighter' and two others k!lled in cult clash in Rivers State:

A fresh clash between two rival cult groups has claimed three lives in Onne, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State.



It was gathered that one cult group initially launched an attack on the other on Friday, January 31, k!lling two members. This led to a retaliatory attack on Saturday.



Among the deceased was a cultist known as ‘Small Lighter,’ real name Christopher, who had allegedly been terrorising the area.



Spokesperson of the State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, who confirmed the incident on Sunday said three suspects have been arrested.



“Yes, I can confirm the cult clash. Three persons were k!lled, and three suspects were arrested,” she stated.



"From the information available to me, one of the suspects, called ‘Small Lighter,’ who has been terrorising the Eleme axis, killed one person from the other cult.



"So, in retaliation, they went after him and killed him. One other person was k!lled earlier, so three people in total.

The United Kingdom to become first country to criminalise artificial intelligence (AI) child abuse tools:

The United Kingdom is set to become the first country to introduce laws targeting the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to generate s3xual abuse images, the government announced on Saturday.



The groundbreaking legislation aims to criminalize the possession, creation, or distribution of AI tools designed to produce s3xualized images of children, with offenders facing up to five years in prison.



The proposed laws will also make it illegal to possess AI-generated "pa******le manuals" that teach individuals how to exploit AI for child s3xual abuse, carrying penalties of up to three years in prison, according to interior minister Yvette Cooper.



In an interview with Sky News on Sunday, Cooper described the issue as a “real disturbing phenomenon” and highlighted the growing threat posed by AI. “Online child s3xual abuse material is increasing, and AI is amplifying the problem,” she said. “These tools are being used to groom children, manipulate their images, and even blackmail them into further abuse. It’s just the most vile of crimes.”



The new legislation will also target AI models specifically used for child abuse and criminalize predators who operate websites that facilitate the sharing of s3xual abuse content or provide advice on grooming children. Those running such platforms could face up to ten years in prison.



The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), which monitors online child exploitation, has raised alarms about the rising use of AI in producing child s3xual abuse images. Over a 30-day period in 2024, IWF analysts identified 3,512 AI-generated child abuse images on a single dark web platform. The number of the most serious category of images increased by 10 percent within a year, the organization reported.



Cooper cited findings from a recent inquiry indicating that approximately 500,000 children across the UK experience some form of abuse annually, with a growing proportion occurring online. The new measures will be included in the forthcoming Crime and Policing Bill set to be presented in Parliament.

Atiku criticizes Tinubu for "sn**ch and grab" approach, lack of commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy: On the evening of Saturday, 2nd February, Mr. Sunday Dare, Special Adviser on Public Communication and one of President Tinubu's spokespeople, made two posts on his verified X account.

The first post addressed the need for countries to adopt stricter economic policies in response to President Trump's administration’s move to impose tariffs under the "America First" agenda. The second post, however, sought to discredit efforts by political leaders aimed at enhancing democracy and good governance in Nigeria.

This latter post is an unsuccessful attempt to undermine those seeking a better direction for Nigeria. It gives an unsettling preview of the Tinubu administration’s plans for the upcoming elections, portraying them as a “combat” and a deepening of their notorious "sn**ch and grab" tactics.

It is essential to clarify that the gathering of political leaders last week was focused on strengthening Nigeria's democracy, ensuring credible elections, and using democracy as a tool for progress and social justice. It is puzzling that the Tinubu administration would dismiss these noble ideals as "Machiavellian inclinations."

If the administration is resorting to Dark Ages rhetoric to describe opposition in a democracy, it reveals a disturbing attack on the progress of our hard-earned democracy and the fundamental human rights it secures.

In another post, Dare commented on the so-called "Tariff War," aligning with President Trump’s "America First" approach to international trade. We strongly condemn the careless remarks by the spokesperson, as these could jeopardize Nigeria’s relations with the U.S. and other international trade partners.

Furthermore, it is contradictory for the Tinubu administration—founded on the principle of self-right to rule—to mock the patriotism of Nigerians. We urge the administration to practice the principles it preaches by adopting "Nigeria First" instead of fostering self-entitlement and other divisive sentiments.

Under the current administration, Nigeria has experienced unprecedented class, ethnic, and religious divisions. This government marks the first time in Nigeria’s history that citizens are treated differently based on their social status and access to infrastructure.

We call on the Tinubu government to focus on uniting and healing the nation and to refrain from making reckless remarks about other countries or questioning the patriotism of the Nigerian people.

Police accidental discharge k!lls man in Abuja:

A police officer accidentally shot and k!lled a man identified as Musa Orido, in Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).



The incident which happened on Friday, January 31, 2025 led to a violent clash in the area.



Some of the residents who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said the clash erupted at about 7 pm around the Tipper Garage area of Kuje after an argument between two men.



Mr Bulus Ayuba, an eyewitness said the argument between the two men started when they came out from a supermarket in the area.



He said the police officer attached to the supermarket stepped in to resolve the issue when the argument became tense.



Ayuba said all efforts made by the police officer yielded no result as the argument continued to attract crowds.



“When the crowd was much and the police officer became helpless, he attempted to shoot into the air to disperse the crowd,” he said.



“Unfortunately, somebody in the crowd touched the gun and that was how he missed it and shot someone in the head."



Mr Philip Adeyeye, another eyewitness said shortly after the victim was taken away, the entire area became rowdy, with youths protesting.



Adeyeye said a vehicle parked at the premises of the supermarket was razed down by the angry youths.



He said it took the intervention of the military and additional deployment of police personnel to bring the situation under control.



Meanwhile, normalcy has returned to the area after violent clash



The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu, confirmed the incident.



He said the police officer involved in the matter was already in the custody of the command, adding that an investigation into the incident had commenced.

Get ready for fresh electricity tariff hike – Federal Government tells Nigerians: The Federal Government says plans are ongoing to increase electricity tariffs “over the next few months”.
It, however, said that the planned increase needed to be balanced by subsidies for less-affluent electricity users.

According to Bloomberg, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Energy, Olu Verheijen, gave this hint at the Africa Heads of State Energy Summit in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where Nigeria presented a $32 billion plan to expand electricity connections by 2030.

According to the presidential aide, Nigeria is trying to resolve the transition to a cost-efficient but cost-reflective tariff to attract private investors.

She said: "One of the key challenges we’re looking to resolve over the next few months is transitioning to a cost-efficient but cost-reflective tariff.
"So the sector generates revenue required to attract private capital, while also protecting the poor and vulnerable."

Enugu State court remands man for severing his wife’s hand:

A Chief Magistrate Court 1 in Enugu State, has remanded one Sunday Echeji, who was accused of cutting off his wife’s hand.



According to a statement issued on Saturday, February 1, by the office of the First Lady of the state, Echeji was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Court 1 in Enugu, Enugu State, on Friday.



The incident, which occurred in Ugwuogede village, Ibagwa-Agu, Nsukka Local Government Area, sparked widespread outrage across the state.

The accused person is charged with attempted murder under Section 275, Subsection A of the Criminal Code CAP 30, Vol. 1 Reversed Laws of Enugu State, 2024.



However, the magistrate court transferred the case to the State Department of Public Prosecution, citing lack of jurisdiction.
