CHAPTER 2

Cassie's first day at work had been a whirlwind. She met the other members of the social media team, who were friendly and welcoming. She got a tour of the office and was shown her desk and computer. Her meeting with the new manager went well. All in all, it had been a great day. But her encounter with Bolanle, the head of HR, left her uneasy. She tried to shake it off and focus on her work, but the feeling lingered.

That night after work, as Cassie lay in bed, she couldn't get the events of the day out of her head. Bolanle's face had been a mask of smug superiority, and she'd seemed to enjoy putting Cassie on edge.
"I hope Bolanle won't try to make my life difficult." She thought to herself.

As Cassie's thoughts raced, her phone beeped. It was a WhatsApp message from her best friend. She felt a sense of relief. Finally, a distraction from her thoughts about Bolanle.

Cassie rolled over in bed and wiggled her legs in delight. It was time to chat with her best friend. Maybe they could talk about Bolanle, or maybe they could just gossip about something else. Either way, it would be a welcome distraction from the events of the day.

Bolanle, would you mind if I spoke to you for a moment, please?" Cassie said warmly, as she approached Bolanle's desk.
This was days after her first day at De Style. She could no longer endure Bolanle's smug facial expressions and snarky looks whenever they crossed paths. So that morning, she had mustered up the courage to speak to Bolanle directly and try to clear the air. "If it means challenging the gods themselves, I must talk to Bolanle and resolve this situation," she thought to herself.

"I mind," Bolanle said abruptly, with a blank face.

"Pardon?" Cassie asked, incredulous

Bolanle sat back in her chair, crossing her legs, and continued. "How dare you approach me and act so rudely. Don't you know I'm your superior?"

"I'm sorry, ma'am," Cassie replied, "I thought we could talk and resolve our differences." But before she could finish, Angela, the HR director, knocked on the door and entered the room. But before she could finish, Angela, the HR director, knocked on the door and entered the room. "Good morning" Angela, greeted.

Bolanle feigned busyness, busying herself with her computer and starting to talk down to Cassie.
"Cassie Ossai, right?" Angela asked, looking her up and down. "You shouldn't be wasting time gossiping. You should focus on your work. We take dedication and discipline very seriously around here."

Cassie, still reeling from the encounter with Bolanle, greeted Angela, then tried to leave the room, but Bolanle stopped her.

"Miss Ossai," Bolanle said, with a fake smile plastered on her face.

Cassie turned to face her, unsure of what to expect.

"Remember to always consider your job here as top priority" Bolanle's voice dripping sarcasm.

Angela was oblivious to the tension in the room.

As Cassie left the room, Bolanle couldn't help but notice her hourglass figure and envy her looks. Even from way back, Cassie had always had the perfect body. Slim upper body, narrow slim waist and thick lower body.
A moment later, Bolanle scowled, biting her lip as she glared at her nemesis. "Who the hell is she to be envied?" she thought. "Her clothes are obviously from a cheap vendor."

"What are you doing tonight?" Jubril asked over the phone.

Bolanle was preparing dinner in the kitchen when her phone rang. She knew it would be a call full of demands and commands, so she wasn't excited to pick up. "I'll be visiting my parents," she replied, rolling her eyes and praying he wouldn't protest.

As expected, he didn't object, but his response was worse. "You can visit them tomorrow. I want us to spend some quality time tonight."

"Oh, Jubril, I've already told them I'm coming over," Bolanle protested.

"It's not like your parents live in a different state. We're all in the same city. Tell them something came up and you can't visit tonight," Jubril insisted.

That night, Bolanle was distant and uninterested in Jubril's attempts to cheer her up. No matter what he did, she seemed to be somewhere else entirely.
Jubril felt his efforts were futile. Bolanle's mood only seemed to darken the more he tried to engage her. Finally, he gave up and retired to the bedroom.

Bolanle sat alone, staring into space, thinking about her situation. She felt trapped and unhappy.

The next morning, Bolanle was absent from work, and Cassie couldn't help but feel a sense of relief. As she was heading down the stairs to get some snacks and juice, later that afternoon, she heard two people whispering. Since she was wearing flats, she was able to creep up to the door and peek through the peephole without making a sound. What she saw took her by surprise.

CHAPTER ONE

The streets of Lagos were packed on a Monday morning, and Cassie was stuck in traffic on her way to the DE STYLE FASHION MAGAZINE office. She was nervous but excited about her new job, and she took a deep breath as she thought about how far she had come since the day of her interview. That day, she had put on her best dress and styled her hair just right. Her instincts gave her the optimistic spirit. As much as she was nervous, there was this glim of hope in her inside. At the end of the day, she aced the interview.

The interview took place in a hotel. But today she is going to the real work place. Finally, on her way to start her new life in this amazing Fashion Company.
It was a dream come through, the day she received the mail which stated that, she had been given the role of social media manager of the almighty DE STYLE FASHION MAGAZINE. Her joy knew no bounds.

She suddenly wears a frown and took another deep breath, her eyes flicking from her wristwatch to the bumper in front of her. She didn't want to be late on her first day. "Damn! Lagos and outrageous traffic" she muttered under her breath.

As the minutes ticked by and the traffic seemed to stand still, Cassie tried to calm her nerves by remembering everything she knew about the magazine. She had always done her research. Who doesn't know that DE STYLE was one of the top fashion magazines in the country. They had a reputation for cutting-edge fashion, beautiful photography, and high-quality writing. Cassie had always been drawn to the magazine's unique style and voice, and now she was about to be a part of it.

"Sweet Jesus baby, i still can't believe it."

She began to imagine herself walking into the offices, her heels clicking on the glossy marble floors. She'd greet the receptionist with a smile and make her way to the HR department, where she would meet her new bosses and coworkers. She'd shake their hands, introduce herself, and get right to work. And then, suddenly, she heard the sound of honking horns. The traffic was starting to move! She heaved a sigh of relief, as the car was put in gear and slowly moved forward. One step closer to her new life she thought.

She took a few deep breaths to calm herself and gathered her things, as the Uber driver alighted at the parking lot. It was time to walk into the gaddรฅm building and start her new life. As she approached the front door, she saw the DE STYLE FASHION MAGAZINE logo in shiny gold letters above the entrance. Taking a deep breath for the last time, she pushed the door open and stepped inside. The reception area was just as sleek and modern as she'd imagined, with glossy black marble floors and a minimalist desk.

A woman sat behind the desk, smiling at her. "Welcome to DE STYLE," she said.

"I'm Cassie Ossai," she said, smiling back and extending her hand. "It's so nice to meet you. I'm the new social media manager." The receptionist shook her hand warmly. "It's wonderful to meet you too. My name is Emma, and I'll be your point of contact for any questions or needs you have. Let me show you to HR." Cassie followed Emma down a long hallway, admiring the sleek decor and bright artwork. They reached a set of double doors, and Emma pushed them open, gesturing for Cassie to step inside.

Inside, a large open space was filled with cubicles and desks, all occupied by few people typing on their computers. In the center of the room was a large conference table, surrounded by chairs. And in the corner was a smaller office, with glass walls and a door that said "HR" in gold letters. Emma led Cassie to the office, and she knocked on the door. A woman's voice called out, "Come in!" and they both stepped inside. Emma introduced Cassie and left the office. The woman behind the desk stood up and extended her hand.
"Welcome, Cassie. I'm Angela, the HR director. It's so wonderful to finally meet you in person! Please, have a seat." Cassie sat down, feeling a mix of nerves and excitement. Angela sat back down as well, smiling warmly. "I just want to say how thrilled we are to have you here. And we know you're going to be a valuable member of our team. I'd love to tell you more about your role and responsibilities, if you're ready to hear them." Cassie nodded, her heart pounding in her chest. "Absolutely," she said. "I'm ready to get started!"

Angela finished briefing Cassie.
"The head of HR will be in her office now, you'd have to go introduce yourself to her."
She said warmly.

The door opened. A tall, dark-haired young lady walked in. "Oh here she is. Good morning Bolanle." Angela said.

"Hello, Angela," The Head of HR responded, her voice confident and friendly. Cassie's heart skipped a beat as she recognized the woman standing in front of them. It was Bolanle, her former friend and now her new boss? "Damn it" they could almost hear her mutter.
Bolanle and Cassie both stood frozen, their eyes locked in a silent stare.
Angela, The HR director cleared her throat, breaking the silence. "Cassie, this is Bolanle, the head of HR. Bolanle, this is the new social media manager. She just resumed. I have to be in the Manager's office now, excuse me please"

With that, Angela, the HR director left the room, closing the door behind her. The silence was deafening. Bolanle's eyes narrowed as she turned to face Cassie. "So, you're the new social media manager, huh?" she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. Cassie shifted uncomfortably in her chair, unsure of how to respond. The tension in the room was palpable. "Well, this should be interesting," Bolanle continued, a smirk on her face and pouts her deep red, lipstick lips.

I landed my butt onto my favourite couch, clutching a small plate of delicious Nigerian jollof rice, prepared my me๐Ÿ˜Š Deborah.

On the opposite wall, a large frame of Fela Kuti's picture hung.
As i savoured the delicious food, i couldn't help but moan with pleasure.
My gaze drifted to the frame, and i screamed at what i saw. The plate of food was now on the floor. Oops! My rice ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

I shrunk back, then wearily looked at the frame again to see if there was some kind of supernatural force at work. I am a spiritual woman, so i can bind and cast if the need be๐Ÿ˜‚

To my shock, yet shamefully. I saw a shadowy reflection of myself in the glass.

My people๐Ÿ˜† it was simply the silhouette of my beautiful face. "Debby are you now a joke to yourself?" Really?

Apparently, it is the effect of my new found passion, of watching too many horror movies lately, from madam Koi koi to Halloween clips.

*'for every action, there's a reaction'
*Sir Isaac Newton.*

Now my sweet jollof is gone. I am done with horror movies! Gaskiya walahi!
