Fct Minister Nyesom Wike to Commence Food Test on Bakeries Restaurant Canteens in FCTA. What's your take on this?

In effort working towards to safeguarding public health and food security in the Federal Capital Territory, the FCT Administration has disclosed plans to commence a comprehensive hepatitis screening of food handlers, particularly those working in restaurants, markets, bakeries, and canteens.

According to a statement signed by the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication and Social Media to the FCT Minister, Lere Olayinka, the FCTA said the initiative is aimed towards preventing hepatitis and other foodborne diseases, protecting public health and empowering food businesses to operate with enhanced confidence and credibility.

The FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, disclosed the screening initiative in a goodwill message to mark the 2025 World Hepatitis event, delivered by the Mandate Secretary, Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr Adedolapo Fasawe, on un Abuja.

The minister noted the risks involved in the spread of Hepatitis A, B, C and E, as he noted that food handlers were an overlooked group whose role was pivotal in safeguarding public health.

Hepatitis A and E, primarily transmitted through contaminated food and water, can rapidly spread through poor hygiene practices, posing serious risks in our rapidly expanding and cosmopolitan city of Abuja.
