This week, we talked about love.
But love is bigger than romance.
It's friendship.
Family.
Community.
Human connection.
And perhaps the greatest form of love is learning to see someone completely, not just the part of them that requires care.
A diagnosis may explain part of someone's journey. It should never become the whole story.

One of the simplest ways to practice empathy is to stop assuming.
Instead of:
"You can't do that."
Ask:
"Do you need any support?"
Instead of:
"You must be in pain."
Ask:
"How are you feeling?"
Sometimes empathy isn't knowing the right answer.
It's being willing to ask the right question.

Sometimes stigma doesn't sound like an insult.
Sometimes it sounds like:
"Are you sure you can handle that?"
"Maybe you shouldn't try."
"With your condition, is that realistic?"
Concern can come from love—but so can limitation.
Support someone without shrinking their possibilities.

Healthy relationships aren't built on perfect health.
They're built on communication, trust, respect, patience, and understanding.
If you love someone living with sickle cell, don't just learn about the disease.
Learn about the person.

A warrior cancelling plans doesn't necessarily mean they don't value you.
Sometimes the body simply needs what the heart doesn't want to admit:
rest.
Good friendship doesn't demand that someone prove they're struggling before receiving compassion.
Sometimes, simply saying:
"I understand. Take care of yourself."
means everything.

People living with sickle cell don't need pity disguised as affection.
They need people willing to understand them.
Real connection begins when we stop loving or rejecting an idea of someone and start getting to know the actual person.
See the person before the condition.
