“Since I moved, I just no dey myself again.”
“After the breakup, I can't focus at work.”

A client once told me, “I dey fear resign. Wetin if I no see another job?”

He had been stuck in a toxic work environment for years. Panic attacks. Low self-worth.
We explored the fear behind change. He wasn’t lazy or ungrateful — he was traumatised by instability.
After months of therapy and building his coping tools, he finally sent that resignation email.
Today, he works fewer hours, earns more, and sleeps better.
Change terrified him. But it led him to peace and purpose.
So when I say, “Every change I embrace leads me closer to peace and purpose,” I say it with evidence.

Reflective Friday

"Healing isn’t a straight road, some days you’ll sprint, other days you’ll crawl. And that’s okay."

Progress isn’t always loud. Sometimes, it’s getting out of bed, setting boundaries, or simply breathing through a tough moment.

In this Nigerian hustle, even small wins count big.

What small win are you celebrating today?

Therapist’s Thoughts Thursday

I once sat with a young Nigerian woman who was doing everything. Full-time job, taking care of younger siblings, side hustle, church activities… the whole nine yards. She was exhausted but kept saying, “If I rest, things will fall apart.”

In our sessions, we started unpacking that belief. Where did she learn that resting meant failing? That if she paused, she’d disappoint everyone?

Little by little, she started carving out small moments to breathe. Ten minutes of silence before the day began. Saying “no” without apologizing. Letting herself nap without guilt.

Her world didn’t fall apart. In fact, she started showing up even stronger. Because real strength is not in doing everything. It’s in knowing when to stop and refill.

Too many strong Naija women think they must keep going no matter what. But the truth is, rest is not weakness. Rest is resistance. Rest is power.

You deserve rest. Let's work together to set healthy boundaries.

There’s a kind of silence many of us were raised into. The one that says, “Keep it moving.”
The one that whispers, “Don’t tell anyone you’re struggling.”
But silence doesn’t protect your peace. It protects the stigma.

In many Black and Nigerian communities, talking about mental health still feels like breaking an unspoken rule. But here’s the truth:
Speaking up is not betrayal. It is resistance. It is healing.

Today’s is about reclaiming your voice and honouring your wellbeing, without apology.

"My mental health matters as much as my physical health."

I once worked with a Client. He was in his early 40s, a father of two, and the breadwinner of his family. He came to see me after he was diagnosed with hypertension, but the issue wasn’t just physical. He was stressed, anxious, and had been ignoring it for years.

He’d been pushing through work stress, family pressure, and the weight of being the “strong one.” Tunde would always say, “It’s just life, na. I’m fine.”

But, as we worked together, he started opening up. He shared how he’d been feeling overwhelmed at work, how his relationships were suffering, and how the constant pressure was affecting his sleep. His physical health wasn’t going to improve until he took his mental health seriously.

By practicing mindfulness, setting healthy boundaries, and recognizing the connection between his mental and physical well-being, Tunde started to heal, not just physically but emotionally too.

You see, mental health isn’t something we can neglect while we care for our bodies. They are connected.
Your mental health matters just as much as your physical health.

Repeat this mantra today. Share it with someone who needs the reminder.

In Nigeria, prayer is central to many of our lives. It’s the foundation of our hope, strength, and resilience. But here’s the truth, faith and mental health care can exist together.

Therapy doesn’t mean you lack faith.

It’s a tool that works with your faith to help you heal, grow, and move forward.

You can have the power of prayer and the healing power of therapy.

It’s time to embrace both.

"I belong. My voice matters. My healing matters."

In my work as a clinical psychologist, I see this every week. Clients walk into my office carrying silence. Years of being told to shrink themselves. At work. In relationships. Even within their own families.

Last month, a young man shared how he never spoke during team meetings. Even when he had ideas, fear of being ignored kept him quiet. Growing up, he was always told, “Respect yourself. Stay small.”

But healing is a process of unlearning that. Together, we worked on building his confidence. It started with one small step. Saying this mantra every morning:

"I belong. My voice matters. My healing matters."

Now, he speaks up. Not because the fear vanished overnight. But because he finally believes his presence is valid. His voice has weight. His healing deserves space.

If you have ever doubted your place, let this be your reminder:
You belong. Your voice matters. Your healing matters.
Say it to yourself today. Share with someone who needs to hear it.
