A battery the size of a coin that never needs charging for 50 years sounds like science fiction but China just made it real. Beijing-based Betavolt Technology has developed the BV100, a nuclear battery measuring just 15 by 15 by 5 millimeters that uses decaying Nickel-63 isotopes to generate electricity continuously ⚡. The company claims it can generate electricity stably and autonomously for 50 years without the need for charging or maintenance. Betavolt states the battery is absolutely safe, has no external radiation, and is suitable for use in medical devices such as pacemakers, artificial hearts, and cochlear implants inside the human body.
Beyond medicine, Betavolt says these atomic batteries can meet the needs of long-lasting power supply in aerospace, AI equipment, microprocessors, advanced sensors, small drones, and micro-robots. Researchers at Northwest Normal University have also developed the Zhulong-1, a Carbon-14 battery with an energy density 10 times higher than lithium-ion and a theoretical lifespan stretching centuries. 🔋 Think about a world where your phone, your medical implant, or your drone simply never runs out of power. Nuclear batteries already boast ten times the energy density of conventional lithium-ion batteries according to Betavolt, and this technology is still in its early stage.
