Match Report

Barcelona appeared set to miss out on taking top spot from Real Madrid, who face Getafe on Sunday, with frustrations boiling over as the Blaugrana looked to be dropping points.

Home boss Hansi Flick was dismissed for apparent dissent in the dying embers, only for Araujo to link-up with Frenkie de Jong and fire past Paulo Gazzaniga to sn**ch victory in the third minute of stoppage time.

Pedri had earlier fired the reigning Spanish champions into a 13th-minute lead, exchanging well with Lamine Yamal before picking out the bottom corner with a left-footed drive.

Axel Witsel rifled Girona level just seven minutes later, however, when the Belgium midfielder converted with an acrobatic finish after captain Arnau Martinez had kept an away corner alive.

Vladyslav Vanat and Portu passed up chances soon after to send Girona ahead, while Marcus Rashford and Fermin Lopez were denied by the woodwork at the other end either side of half-time.

Pau Cubarsi then thought he had found a decisive finish just past the hour, though his strike was ruled out for offside before Araujo's late heroics sparked celebratory scenes from the Barcelona bench.

With the international break over and club football returning, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid have tried a new technique to ensure their players go the extra mile.

On Wednesday, Bayern gave their players new Audi company cars and on Thursday, Real did the same but with BMW.

Both European giants have partnerships with their respective brands and have rewarded their players vehicles of their choosing from the options available to them.

England stars Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (Real Madrid) benefitted from this treat as a result.

Kane who was not present to collect his in person in Bavaria chose the Audi Q8 SUV TFSI e - which is currently valued from £86,745 on the manufacturer's official website.

It has acceleration of 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds and an electric range of 51m3.

Kane was one of 12 Bayern players to choose that car, including the likes of Luis Diaz, Serge Gnabry and Manuel Neuer.

Bayern will hope their players can keep putting their foot down when they return to Bundesliga action in Der Klassiker against Borussia Dortmund.

Audi used to sponsor Real Madrid, but the Spanish giants have been with rival German manufacturers BMW for several seasons now.

Among the plethora of options available to him, Bellingham chose the BMW XM model which costs from £112,820 on BMW's official website.

Its acceleration is quicker than Kane's car with it going 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds.

Meanwhile, Alexander-Arnold opted for the IX model which is priced from £75,405 and does 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds.

The defender is currently recovering from a hamstring injury but will be cheering on Bellingham and Co when Real travel to Getafe on Sunday night for a Madrid derby in LaLiga.

Speaking on the podcast Scontro Diretto, Inter Milan star Bergomi confessed that the demolition of the San Siro was lamentable and that the Milan duo should each have their own exclusive home ground.

Bergomi said, "Stadium designs nowadays all seem to fall into some kind of sameness, all that wrap-around circular structure. You walk into the stadium, you go down the steps and there are all sorts of amenities in there - it's easy to go to the bathroom, get a sandwich, do whatever. And San Siro is really functionally deficient in that regard."

"My family lives in the neighbourhood near the stadium and walk there often. It's been that way since I was young, and I just always stayed there, running and hanging out. To say that it was demolished, of course I regret it in my heart, but we have to move forward. And I think both teams really deserve to each have their own home stadium."

Raphinha has revealed that he was close to leaving Barcelona in 2024 for Saudi Arabia, but was convinced to stay at the club by Hansi Flick.

Last summer, the Brazilian felt unwanted in Catalonia and was tempted by a move to Saudi Arabia for life-changing money. However, Flick, who replaced Xavi Hernandez as Barcelona’s head coach in May last year, ensured that Raphinha stayed in Spain.

In 2024-25, across Europe's top five leagues, only Liverpool's Mohamed Salah (57) registered more goal involvements than Raphinha (56).

In the same campaign, the former Leeds United technician also equalled Cristiano Ronaldo's 2013-14 Champions League record of 21 goal contributions in a single season in the competition, while only eight-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi (14 in 2011-12) has scored more goals for Barcelona in a single campaign than Raphinha's 13.

However, before this scintillating season, the 28-year-old was seriously considering a move to a different continent.

"The offer we had from Saudi Arabia really tempted me,” Raphinha told ESPN. “It would have solved not just my personal life, but also the lives of my parents, my son... a lot of people.”

"Obviously, we thought about leaving [Barcelona]. I thought it might be time to leave, but then we talked to [Flick], first on the phone and then at the beginning of the preseason, and he managed to convince me to stay. I'm glad he did."

The winger also divulged how he felt disrespected by Barcelona, due to their interest in Athletic Club talent Nico Williams, who eventually signed a new ten-year deal at his current employers.

"A lot of people [wanted me out]," he said. "It's impossible to name them all. Suddenly, I wasn't doing what they thought I should be doing, what they thought I had to do.

"But I always had a clear conscience about what I was able to deliver. I was extremely dedicated. Maybe they wanted 30 goals per season, which isn't really my style. I'm not a striker, I'm a player who helps a lot with commitment, with a lot of dedication, a lot of hard work, that's Raphinha. I'll always give my best.

"So because I wasn't the player they expected, many wanted me out, they thought I had."

Raphinha has been unplayable for Barcelona, and in 2024-25, he netted 18 goals and provided nine assists in LaLiga. Over the course of the new Spanish top-flight campaign, he has recorded five goal involvements, but has been unavailable for recent fixtures due to a thigh issue and is expected to return for the mouthwatering El Clásico against Real Madrid on 26th October.

Japan come back to beat Brazil for the first time in their history.

Japan came from two goals down to beat Brazil 3-2 in a friendly in Tokyo.

Paulo Henrique and Gabriel Martinelli had put Carlo Ancelotti's team 2-0 up at half-time, but three goals in 19 minutes from Takumi Minamino, Keito Nakamura and Ayase Ueda earned victory for the hosts.

The Samurai Blue had met the five-time World champions on 13 previous occasions, losing 11, and drawing 2 of those.

This results comes just days after Brazil put five unanswered goals past South Korea.

Both sides have already qualified for next year's World Cup.
