Customs Seizes ₦654 Million Hidden in Cartons at Kano Airport
The Nigeria Customs Service has announced that its officers seized a total of ₦653.9 million in cash that no one has claimed ownership of at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport.
The announcement was made on Tuesday during a press briefing held at the Customs House in Bompai.
Three suspects have been handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further investigation.
The Customs Area Controller for Kano/Jigawa, Dalhatu Abubakar, stated that the seizure followed credible intelligence and thorough investigation by Customs officers at the airport.
He said a passenger named Ahmed Salisu, who was carrying a Ghanaian passport, was apprehended after arriving from Saudi Arabia via Ethiopian Airlines.
“Upon arrival, like other passengers, the suspect was reminded of the requirement to declare any foreign currency exceeding $10,000,” he said.
The controller added that the inspection of the suspect’s luggage led to the discovery of the hidden foreign currencies in cartons.
The recovered funds include $420,900, £5,825, 3.9 million CFA, and 224,000 CFA, all estimated to be worth ₦653.9 million.
Abubakar confirmed that the suspect did not declare the money upon arrival, as required by law.
