JUST IN: NPA Targets 48-Month Completion for $1bn Ports Reconstruction.

The Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, has announced that the $1 billion total reconstruction of the Apapa, Tincan Island, Calabar, Warri, and Port Harcourt ports will be completed within 48 months.

Speaking at the World Ports Conference of the International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH) today in Kobe, Japan, Dantsoho said President Bola Tinubu had approved the massive infrastructure overhaul as part of efforts to modernise Nigeria’s seaport system and boost foreign investment in the maritime sector.

He revealed that rehabilitation works would commence in the first quarter of 2026, following ongoing engineering, environmental, and design studies.

“We are targeting a 48-month duration for reconstruction, and we’re hoping to commence by the first quarter of next year,” he said.

Dantsoho praised the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, for his commitment to the federal government’s maritime vision, noting that the sector was central to achieving Tinubu’s $1 trillion economy target.

The NPA boss, who also serves as Vice President of IAPH (Africa), emphasised the importance of collaboration and trust among global port stakeholders to attract sustainable investment.

He disclosed that Nigeria had awarded a port community system contract to a subsidiary of the Singapore Port Authority to drive the country’s national single window initiative.

Dantsoho added that Nigeria must invest heavily in automation and technology to keep pace with global port operations, stressing that the project’s success would depend largely on foreign investment partnerships.

JUST IN: FG orders tertiary institutions to return unused TETFund allocations within 30 days.

The Federal Government has directed all tertiary institutions across the country to submit detailed reports of unutilised intervention funds from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund within the next 30 days, warning that unspent allocations may be recalled and redirected to other priority projects.

Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, gave the directive on Thursday in Abuja during a meeting with heads of tertiary institutions, where he expressed concern over the growing trend of idle allocations meant for infrastructure and academic development.

Alausa said the government could no longer tolerate delays and bottlenecks that prevent critical education funds from being effectively utilised, stressing that every TETFund naira represents public trust.

“Institutions must submit reconciled reports of all unutilised funds within 30 days, which will be jointly verified. Unused funds may be redirected to priority projects, and carrying them over without strong justification will no longer be allowed,” he stated.

The minister also announced plans to introduce capacity-building programmes aimed at strengthening project management, compliance, and reporting among institutions.

According to him, quarterly reviews will now be held to assess progress, while sanctions will be imposed on any institution that fails to use its allocations responsibly.

To promote transparency, Alausa said the government will launch a public dashboard showing disbursement and utilisation data, while institutions will be mandated to publish periodic project progress reports.

He emphasised that the success of the initiative depends on the active collaboration of all stakeholders, including TETFund officials, institutional heads, bursars, procurement officers, and auditors.

“TETFund must lead with professionalism, enforce compliance, and ensure transparency. Institutional leaders should drive urgency and accountability, while oversight bodies must flag irregularities promptly,” Alausa said.

This directive comes amid renewed concerns over billions of naira in TETFund allocations left unutilised by many tertiary institutions.

In July 2025, the Fund had warned that it might delist institutions that consistently fail to access or apply their approved funds, adding that such allocations could be reassigned to more compliant schools.

TETFund had earlier allocated N1.6 trillion to Nigerian tertiary institutions in 2025, focusing on campus security, healthcare, and infrastructure.

BREAKING: Tinubu grants presidential pardon to Herbert Macaulay, 174 others

The Council of State on Thursday approved the exercise of the presidential prerogative of mercy for 175 persons across various categories.

The decision followed a presentation by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), who conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s recommendations based on the report of the Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy, at Thursday’s Council of State meeting held at the State House, Abuja.

Although the full names of the beneficiaries are yet to be published, our correspondent gathered that pardons were granted to one of Nigeria’s founding fathers, Herbert Macaulay and former FCT minister in the Babangida regime, Maj-Gen. Mamman Vatsa (retd).

Members of the Ogoni Nine and Ogoni Four are also beneficiaries.

“Herbert Macaulay and Vatsa are among the two major ones on that list,” a source who attended the meeting told our correspondent.

Macaulay, often called the “father of Nigerian nationalism,” was twice convicted by the colonial authorities in Lagos.

In 1913, while in private practice as a surveyor, he was tried for misappropriating funds from an estate he administered and sentenced to prison; historians have long debated the fairness of that prosecution.

In 1928, after his Lagos Daily News published incendiary claims during the Eleko (Oba of Lagos) agitation, he was convicted of sedition in the so-called “Gunpowder Plot” case and jailed for six months with hard labour.

Vatsa, a poet, former FCT minister and member of the Supreme Military Council, was executed by firing squad on March 5, 1986, after a secret military tribunal convicted him of treason over an alleged coup against then military ruler Ibrahim Babangida, his childhood friend.

The case has remained controversial for decades, with periodic calls for a posthumous pardon.

Out of the 175 beneficiaries, 82 inmates were granted a full presidential pardon, 65 had their sentences reduced, while seven death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment.

Briefing State House correspondents after the meeting, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna state explained, “82 of the inmates were granted full pardon, 65 had their sentences reduced, while seven death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment.

“The decision underscores the President’s commitment to justice and correctional reform.”

The meeting, chaired by President Tinubu, also ratified key appointments, including Dr. Aminu Yusuf from Niger State as Chairman of the National Population Commission and Tonge Bularafa as Federal Commissioner representing Yobe State in the Commission. Both appointments received unanimous approval.

JUST IN: Accept World Bank verdict, your policies have deepened poverty – ADC to Tinubu.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to accept the recent World Bank report showing a sharp rise in poverty across Nigeria.

According to them, it is clear proof that his administration’s economic policies have worsened the living conditions of millions of citizens.

In a statement released on Thursday and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said the World Bank’s October 2025 report which revealed that 139 million Nigerians are now living below the poverty line, up from 81 million in 2019 exposes the government’s economic failures and misplaced priorities.

“The World Bank’s report tells a painful truth under the APC and President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, more Nigerians have slipped into poverty than ever before.

“In 2019, four out of every ten Nigerians were poor; today, that number has risen to at least six out of ten,” the ADC said.

“Yet, during his Independence Day speech, President Tinubu claimed that the worst is over, quoting figures that now appear to be nothing more than carefully crafted propaganda to paint a false picture of progress.

“Behind those polished numbers lies the harsh reality of growing human suffering families going hungry, children leaving school, and households selling their few possessions just to afford food and medicine.”

According to the statement, under the APC government, about 30 million more Nigerians have fallen into extreme poverty, unable to afford enough food even if they spend all they earn on it.

“The government may boast of record revenues and stability, but the truth is Nigerians are getting poorer every day,” the ADC said.

Tinubu Chairs Police Council Meeting

President Bola Tinubu is currently presiding over a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council at the State House, Abuja.

The session, which began around 2:39PM, this Thursday, comes shortly after the Council of State meeting, where Tinubu presented nominees to replace Mahmood Yakubu as INEC Chairman.

This meeting follows the President’s renewed push for state policing and better security coordination. Tinubu had earlier vowed to review all aspects of security and create a state police system, while also strengthening forest guards across the country.

At today’s meeting, members observed a minute of silence in honour of former Inspector-General Solomon Arase, who passed away on August 31, 2025.

The Police Council, chaired by Tinubu, includes Vice President, Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam, and all 36 governors or their representatives.

The Council is reviewing national security updates, ongoing police reforms, and officers’ welfare, while also considering matters of leadership and coordination across states.
