By: Ojay Matthew

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a Federal Polytechnic in Gwarinpa, one of the largest residential estates in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja. The institution, which will focus on advancing technological, vocational, and entrepreneurial education, is to be named Bola Ahmed Tinubu Polytechnic in honor of the President.

In a letter dated January 16, 2025, and addressed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, conveyed the federal government’s decision. He explained that the establishment of the polytechnic aligns with the national policy on education, aimed at equipping Nigerians with skills for economic development.

The letter also requested the FCT Minister to propose suitable locations in Gwarinpa for both temporary and permanent sites for the polytechnic. Dr. Alausa noted that a technical team from the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) would visit the recommended sites for inspection. The final approval will depend on the team’s findings and recommendations.

Reacting to the development, the chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, praised President Tinubu for the significant initiative. In a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs, Kingsley Madaki, Maikalangu described the polytechnic’s establishment as a milestone for Gwarinpa residents and a boost to the FCT’s development.

He also expressed gratitude to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, for his pivotal role in realizing this long-anticipated project. Maikalangu noted that the polytechnic would not only provide educational opportunities but also foster economic growth within the region.

The AMAC chairman also highlighted the historic appointment of an FCT native, Zaphaniah Bitrus Jisalo, as a federal minister, acknowledging his contributions to the progress of the FCT.

The Bola Ahmed Tinubu Polytechnic is anticipated to be a transformative project for Gwarinpa, enhancing access to quality education and empowering residents with skills for the future.

Middle Belt Youth Leader Canvasses Support For Agbese

A foremost youth group, the All Middle Belt Youth Forum (AMBYF), has taken a critical look at the performance of Hon. Philip Agbese, the lawmaker representing the people of Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency of Benue State in the House of Representatives, describing him as a champion of progress.

Comrade Aluh Moses Odeh, National Leader, All Middle Belt Youth Forum (AMBYF), who spoke to Sunday Independent exclusively from his Benue State base, said that Hon. Agbese had so far, consistently demonstrated his commitment to the welfare and development of his constituents.

Odeh maintained that despite facing opposition from some quarters within his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), Agbese had remained focused on delivering projects and initiatives that benefit the people of Enone.

Listing some of Dr Agbese’s projects and achievements, Odeh said that the lawmaker’s humanitarian work had been second to none, adding that Agbese’s projects included a state-of-the-art maternity clinic and borehole project.

He said that the lawmaker had planned to rehabilitate the Okpokwu Stadium worth over N180,000,000, lamenting that the project, which was aimed at revamping sporting activities among the youth of Enone, was being frustrated by the powers-that-be without considering the interest of the constituents.

Odeh also spoke on ongoing projects in Ukwonyo Ward Ado LGA, which he said were designed to improve the lives of constituents in Ukwonyo Ward, Ado Local Government Area that, he issued, were being frustrated by some anti-progressive forces to demarket Hon. Philip Agbese.

“His achievements include sponsorship of eight bills and 14 motions, a testament to his commitment to legislative excellence, building bridges with his colleagues.”

Dangote Refinery Increases Petrol Price to N955/Litre as Oil Climbs to $82/Barrel

By: Ojay Matthew

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has adjusted its Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) pricing structure, commonly known as petrol, in response to rising crude oil prices in the global market.

In a statement released on Friday, the refinery announced that customers purchasing between 2 million and 4.99 million litres of PMS would now pay N955 per litre, while bulk buyers acquiring 5 million litres or more would be charged N950 per litre. The revised pricing marks a 6.17% increase, equivalent to N55.5 per litre, from the N899.50 per litre promotional rate offered during the December 2024 festive period.

The new rates, effective from 5:30 PM today, will apply to all remaining stock balances and pending orders, the statement noted. The refinery attributed the increase to the surge in global crude oil prices.

According to market checks, the adjustment has spurred a rush among motorists and retailers in Lagos and surrounding areas, with some filling stations preemptively raising their pump prices.

Meanwhile, the price of crude oil, including Nigeria’s Bonny Light, rose by 5.1%, reaching $82 per barrel compared to $78 the previous day. This increase underscores higher production costs for refiners. The Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has attributed the rise to market uncertainties, which are expected to persist in 2025.

Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, Nigeria's Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), addressed the situation during the inaugural meeting of the Petroleum Industry Stakeholders Forum (PISF) in Abuja. He emphasized that petrol prices would continue to reflect global crude oil trends due to the full deregulation of the downstream sector.

“The essence of deregulation is to allow prices to stabilize based on market conditions. Previously, there were constant issues with fuel subsidies, but now those concerns no longer exist. Prices will adjust in response to fluctuations in crude oil costs,” Lokpobiri explained.

He highlighted that during the holiday season, petrol prices varied significantly across filling stations, with some selling above N1,000 per litre. The minister assured that the government’s priority remains ensuring quality control, availability, and fair dispensing practices at retail outlets.

Huub Stockman, Chairman of the Major Energy Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN), also weighed in, explaining that while crude oil prices influence petrol costs, the relationship is not always immediate. "Crude and product prices don’t always correlate directly, and changes in crude oil prices may take time to reflect in derivative products," Stockman said.

The PISF is expected to serve as a collaborative platform for addressing key issues in the oil and gas sector, fostering dialogue among industry stakeholders to ensure stability and efficiency.

NSCDC Apprehends 36 Scavengers in Abuja, Recovers Drugs and Weapons

By: Ojay Matthew

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has arrested 36 scavengers for alleged possession of illicit drugs and weapons. Dr. Olusola Odumosu, Commandant of the NSCDC FCT Command, confirmed the arrests during a briefing in Abuja on Friday, stating that the suspects were apprehended in various parts of the city.

This development follows a directive from FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, banning scavenging activities across the territory and temporarily suspending operations of waste collectors, known locally as "pan-takers."

Recovered items from the suspects include four daggers, three jackknives, two chisels, three knives, ten bottles of codeine syrup, 45 wraps of cannabis sativa, trash bags, and iron rods.

Commandant Odumosu assured the public that investigations are underway, and due process will be observed in prosecuting the suspects. He emphasized the need for residents to use authorized waste management services and avoid engaging scavengers, commonly referred to as "Baba Nbola," for safety reasons.

“These scavengers often use their activities as a cover for criminal operations, including theft and vandalism of public infrastructure such as manhole covers, solar panels, streetlights, and cables,” Odumosu explained. “They pose significant risks to the safety and security of the FCT.”

The commandant also warned that some scavengers serve as informants to criminals, gathering intelligence about households through discarded items that reveal personal lifestyles and financial status.

Odumosu urged residents to be vigilant and cooperate with security agencies to curb these activities. “Report any suspicious behavior by scavengers and avoid allowing them near your homes, streets, or neighborhoods,” he advised. “Their operations should be confined to designated dump sites.”

The NSCDC reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of the FCT and called on the public to support ongoing efforts to eliminate criminal elements disguised as scavengers.
