But the lifestyle — the unlimited card, the shopping, the hotel rooftops —
that is beginning to strain.
Vivian has noticed.
She has not said anything.
She is watching.
And watching.
Then one morning she swipes the card.
It is declined.
Not because it is empty.
Because Richard put a limit on it.
Without telling her.
Without discussing it.
Without asking.
Vivian does not scream.
She does not cry.
She goes home. She sits at her mirror.
She opens the notebook.
She picks up her pen.
And then —
something she did not plan for happens.
Richard comes home and tells her the truth.

She married Richard Adelaja — 52, wealthy, self-made, completely besotted with her.
She has been married to him for two years.
She does not cook.
She does not clean.
She does not manage the house.
She has staff for all of that.
What Vivian does — is look spectacular at his events, spend his money with taste, and make him feel like the luckiest man in the room.
That was the arrangement.
Nobody said it out loud.
But everybody understood it.
Richard understood it most of all.
He told himself he was fine with it.
He told himself a beautiful young wife who made other men jealous was worth every naira.
