Under the old mango tree, grandmother sat with her grandchildren at her feet. She spoke in proverbs, her voice soft but firm:

“When the roots are forgotten, the leaves will wither.”

“A child who does not know where he comes from, will not know where he is going.”

The children giggled at first, then listened with wide eyes as she explained each saying with stories from their ancestors.
