A wave of sadness and unanswered questions has followed the reported death of Mary Habila, a young woman who died at the residence of Nigeria’s Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, in Uburu, Ebonyi State. The incident has drawn widespread public attention, with many Nigerians demanding clarity on the circumstances surrounding her death.

According to official statements, Mary Habila died on June 27, 2026, shortly after arriving at Senator David Umahi’s private residence in Uburu, Ebonyi State. The Minister described the incident as “deeply unfortunate” and expressed shock over the development.

Umahi’s office identified Habila as a physiotherapist employed by the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS) who had reportedly been on secondment to the Federal Ministry of Works.

The Minister’s office stated that concern arose after Habila became unresponsive inside her room. Her family reportedly forced the door open and found her unconscious before rushing her to a hospital, where doctors confirmed her death.

Reacting to the tragedy, Umahi said he immediately advised the family to allow an autopsy to scientifically determine the exact cause of death. He initially claimed the family was reluctant to approve the procedure, stressing that only a medical examination could establish what truly happened.
