THE POLITICS OF DOUBLE-SPEAK & NIGERIA'S ECONOMIC PAIN (1)

Nigeria’s subsidy debate has become the clearest example of political double-speak in our recent history. When President Bola Tinubu was in opposition during the Jonathan administration, he led loud condemnations against subsidy removal, calling it anti-people and insensitive. Yet on May 29, 2023, in his very first speech as President, he announced “subsidy is gone” with no transition plan. That single sentence immediately altered the cost of living for every Nigerian household.

The impact was instant and severe. Fuel prices tripled overnight. Transport, food, and services followed. What was sold to Nigerians as a bold reform to free up revenue has instead deepened hardship, while the promised reliefs remain slow and uneven. The logic of saving money has not translated into visible development in communities.

'Where did five million households go?' — Atiku questions FG's N600bn cash transfers

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar says the federal government should account for more than N600 billion said to have been disbursed to vulnerable Nigerians through its cash transfer programme.

In a statement issued by Phrank Shaibu, his media aide, Atiku, presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), also questioned the discrepancy between the government’s current claim that slightly more than 10 million households benefited from the programme and an earlier figure of 15 million households announced by the presidency.

2027: Speaker Abbas tasks Nigerians to assess candidates by actions, past records, not rhetorics.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D., GCON, has urged Nigerians to vote for political parties and their candidates in the 2027 general elections based on their actions and past records, not rhetorics.

Speaker Abbas noted that members of the opposition who have declared themselves as alternatives to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, had been in power before, and Nigerians can see what they did when they held various public offices.

The Speaker stated this in his goodwill message at the maiden graduation ceremony for 4,050 youths at the Kaduna State Institute of Vocational Training and Skills Development, Balarabe Musa Institute, Rigachikun, Kaduna, on Thursday.

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has warned against the growing politicisation and weaponisation of religion in Nigeria’s electoral process, cautioning political actors and religious leaders against exploiting faith to manipulate voters, suppress critical thinking and divert attention from issues of governance and development.
