Episode three
Velocity
Velocity is one of the major reason why a foreign beat will always sound different & better to us. Velocity is that thing that give digital music a live feel. Remember in our last lesson (Episode two Digital /Live {Analog} production) we said that the essential idea of digital production is to make it sound as live is possible. Now velocity is that tool. Come to think of it, if you were producing live, there is absolutely no way you would hit your drums & instruments with the same velocity. The dynamics of your hat & snare for instance getting high at some point & low at another is what makes the great difference. But unfortunately, most young producer don't know this fact and most of the time keep a parallel velocity.
Tip- Go to the demo songs that comes with your DAW say Fl Studio & Reason & check out the velocities. Matter of fact, for y'all Fl Studio lovers, i refer you to a demo song "Reegz - That's true". Look out especially for the hat and chords.
Tip- Never keep parallel velocities especially for hats, snares & chords. After playing your chords on a midi keyboard & you find the velocities look jagged, listen to it in the context of the mix first rather than making it stiff. There certain situations where you might not even quantize some piano lines & chords. Bottom line, keep the dynamics. This can sometimes be partly achieved through AUTOMATION our next topic
