Who Will Protect Our Communities? The Responsibility We All Share

Many parents do not want their sons to become soldiers. They worry about the dangers, sacrifices and uncertainty that come with military service. Every mother wants her child to live a peaceful life, return home safely and build a future away from danger.

Yet, there is a question we must honestly ask ourselves: If every parent insists that their son should not become a soldier, who will protect our communities?

We all want soldiers to stand between us and insecurity. We want them to protect our homes, defend our communities, rescue people during emergencies and respond when danger threatens. We want them to be courageous when we are afraid. But behind every soldier is someone's son, daughter, husband, wife, brother or loved one.

The Nigerian Army and other security agencies cannot protect society without people willing to serve. Security is not the responsibility of soldiers alone. We all have a role to play.

Parents have a role in raising responsible citizens. Young people have a role in choosing lawful and meaningful careers, including national service. Communities have a role in supporting security personnel and providing useful information. Government has a responsibility to equip, train and protect those who serve. Citizens must also respect the sacrifices made by our security forces.

It is understandable for a parent to fear for a child who chooses military service. But we should also remember that the soldier protecting our community today is someone's child.

Let us therefore appreciate those who have answered the call to serve. Let us encourage responsible young Nigerians who choose to dedicate themselves to protecting their fellow citizens. And let us demand that those who serve are properly trained, equipped, supported and treated with dignity.

If we all say, "Let somebody else's son become a soldier," then we must ask: who will protect us when danger comes?

National security is a collective responsibility. Not everyone has to become a soldier, but everyone has a responsibility to contribute to a safer Nigeria.

May God bless the men and women of the Nigerian Army and all members of our security forces who continue to serve and protect our nation.

TSUBEB ₦5,000 ID CARD DEDUCTION: TEACHERS DEMANDS FULL EXPLANATION

The Taraba State Universal Basic Education Board (TSUBEB) has clarified reports concerning the deduction of ₦5,000 from the salaries and arrears of permanent primary school teachers across the state, describing the payment as part of the process for producing Permanent Identity Cards for teachers.

While TSUBEB has explained that the initiative was discussed with and supported by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), the clarification raises another important question that deserves a clear and transparent answer:

What exactly is the identity card being produced, and what features does it contain that justify a ₦5,000 deduction from each teacher?

Nigerians believes that teachers and members of the public have every right to know the full specifications, production cost and procurement arrangements of the proposed Permanent Identity Card.

If ₦5,000 is being deducted from thousands of teachers, TSUBEB should publicly explain what the ₦5,000 covers. Is it only the physical card? Does it include biometric registration, database development, security features, photography, digital verification, printing, replacement provisions or other administrative services?

The Board should also disclose, in the interest of transparency, the estimated total amount expected to be generated from the deductions and how the funds will be accounted for.

GOVERNMENT SHOULD PROTECT THE COMMON MAN

Fatom Media Concepts is advocating for the common Nigerian, particularly workers who depend on their salaries to meet basic household needs.

We acknowledge the importance of proper identification, accurate staff records, security and a reliable database for teachers. However, the question remains whether the financial burden for a government identity-card project should be transferred directly to workers through salary deductions.

ABUJA, Nigeria — Growing concerns over age restrictions in employment recruitment have renewed calls for the Nigerian government and employers to reconsider how age is used as a determining factor in job opportunities.

For many unemployed Nigerians, particularly those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, securing employment is already a major challenge. Strict age limits attached to job vacancies may further reduce their chances of employment, even when they possess the required qualifications, experience and skills.

The situation can become more complicated when applicants are required to provide identification documents such as the National Identification Number (NIN), with personal information expected to correspond across official records.

Pressure to Reduce Age

Observers argue that the combination of limited employment opportunities, strict age requirements and documentation challenges may put some desperate job seekers under pressure to manipulate their dates of birth to qualify for employment.

While falsifying or unlawfully altering official records is not a solution and could create serious problems in the future, the circumstances that encourage people to consider such actions deserve attention.

A person who has spent years acquiring education, professional qualifications and work experience may find themselves automatically excluded from a vacancy simply because they are above an advertised age threshold.

Why Do Some Schools Decline After Years of Success?

Many schools that were once thriving eventually begin to decline, and in most cases, the reasons are linked to self-centered ownership and poor governance.

Some common issues include:

- Sudden termination of hardworking management teams that contributed to the school's growth.
- Refusal to secure or renew accreditation for academic programmes.
- Frequent increases in school fees without corresponding improvements.
- Delayed or unpaid staff salaries, which affect the quality of teaching.
- Failure to address students' post-graduation concerns, such as certificate processing and other academic matters.

Students place their trust in an institution the moment they are admitted. School owners have a responsibility to protect that trust by supporting effective management rather than undermining it for personal interests.

A school's reputation is built over many years but can be destroyed in a short time through poor leadership and selfish decisions.
