CONGRATULATIONS, WE NOW HAVE STATE POLICE
The House of Representatives pass the State Police Bill today
What does it mean?
Before we celebrate, the BILL has not officially become a law yet
The bill has just cleared its first major legislative step to become reality in Nigeria.
For it to fully become operational, it must go through the rest process as required by law
1. The Senate must also pass the bill with a two thirds majority.
2. At least 24 out of the 36 states (two-thirds) must vote to approve it.
3. Finally, President Bola Tinubu must sign it into law.
This are the next three stages the BILL will have to go through before it becomes operational
Once it becomes operational, it will change the security structure of Nigeria
State Governors will officially become the true Chief Security Officers of their states, with the legal authority to issue direct, lawful commands to their State Commissioners of Police.
The structure on ground before, a Commissioner of Police in Lagos or Kano can ignore a Governor because they report strictly to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) in Abuja.
No more blame on the President or the Federal for security challenges faved by each state.
You can now hold your State Governor for security issus once it becomes operational
I hope you understand it better now
Thanks
Ignorance of the law is no excuse
