BREAKING: SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT ON RECENT ISSUES SURROUNDING MRS TRACY OHIRI’S MATTER

The attention of the Honourable Minister of Works, Senator Engr. David Umahi, CON, has been drawn to the ongoing public discourse surrounding the claims and counterclaims by Mrs. Tracy Ohiri, particularly as they relate to her lawyer, Barr. Marshall Abubakar. Ordinarily, we would have ignored this, but it has become necessary, in the interest of truth and public clarity, to address these issues directly.

First, it is important to clarify that Barr. Marshall Abubakar acted in good faith and was motivated solely by a desire to assist Mrs. Ohiri. His involvement was entirely selfless and driven by a genuine effort to resolve the matter amicably.

At no time did Barr. Marshall discuss or negotiate payment of any money to Mrs. Ohiri. However, some associates and well-meaning individuals independently approached him with the intention of helping her.

For the avoidance of doubt, the Honourable Minister had clearly stated two conditions for resolving the matter: either the issue should be determined in court, or Mrs. Ohiri should provide verifiable evidence, including all relevant communications, to substantiate her claims.

It must also be emphasized that Barr. Marshall Abubakar conducted himself with utmost decency and integrity throughout. He neither requested nor received any money from the Honourable Minister at any point.

Following the failure to meet the stated conditions, particularly the inability to provide credible and verifiable evidence, the Minister has directed his legal team to proceed with all court processes to ensure that the truth is fully established.

The Minister further acknowledged that he had indicated to Barr. Marshall that if Mrs. Ohiri could provide complete evidence, logs and communications from the period in question, some friends and associates were willing to contribute the sum of One Billion Naira (N1b). The Minister is still waiting for the above.

It is also worth noting that for several years, the Minister chose to remain silent despite persistent provocations and public attacks. This restraint was deliberate and guided by a commitment to focus on state and national service rather than distractions. However, recent developments have made it necessary to respond.

The Honourable Minister therefore extends sincere appreciation to Nigerians who have taken their time to examine the facts and arrive at an informed understanding of the situation. There is growing awareness that not everyone who presents themselves as a victim truly is one, and that, in some cases, narratives are deliberately inverted.

The Honourable Minister remains fully committed to his mandate. He will not be distracted from the ongoing work of delivering critical road infrastructure across the country. The focus remains on results, service, and ensuring that Nigerians continue to benefit from projects that improve connectivity, economic growth, and national development.

We assure Nigerians that this administration will continue to pursue its transformation agenda with dedication, transparency, and an unwavering sense of responsibility.

The case of Yewande Oyediran remains one of Nigeria’s high-profile cases of domestic violence involving a high-ranking legal official.

It sparked intense public debate regarding the influence of power within the judicial system and the thin line between "crime of passion" and "premeditated murder."

On the morning of February 2, 2016, at their residence in the Akobo area of Ibadan, a domestic dispute erupted between Yewande Oyediran and her husband, Oyelowo Oyediran. Oyelowo, who was based in France, had returned to Nigeria for a visit.

The argument, reportedly centered on allegations of infidelity and a child Oyelowo allegedly fathered outside the marriage, escalated into physical violence.

In November 2017, Justice Muntar Abimbola delivered the final judgment. While the prosecution sought a conviction for murder, the court downgraded the charge.

The court ruled that while Yewande caused the death of her husband, the prosecution failed to prove premeditated intent (malice aforethought).

The judge noted that the act occurred in the heat of a domestic altercation, which legally mitigated the offense from murder to manslaughter.

The Duration was Seven years of imprisonment. The sentence was backdated to her initial arrest in February 2016.Given the seven-year term and time served, Yewande Oyediran completed her sentence and was released around early 2023.

The case left a lasting impact on the Nigerian legal and social landscape for several reasons.

The judge, Justice Muntar Abimbola, also factored in several mitigating circumstances that influenced the duration of the sentence itself.

As a First-Time Offender Yewande had no prior criminal record. Her defense team made a formal plea for leniency (allocutus) following her conviction, which is a standard procedure where the court considers the defendant’s character and circumstances before finalizing the term.

The case is considered legally closed. Her case remains a significant reference point in Nigerian legal history specifically for its discussions on provocation and intent in domestic violence trials involving high-ranking public officials.

This is a deeply tragic and distressing case regarding ritual-related violence and the disappearance and discovery of Suleiman Rahama Onono.

Suleiman Rahama Onono was a 20-year-old student at the Federal College of Education (FCE) in Okene, Kogi State. Her death has sparked significant outcry regarding the safety of students and the rise of "ritual killings" suspected to be linked to "Yahoo Plus" (internet fraudsters who incorporate ritual practices).

Rahama was reported missing after she left her residence and failed to return. Her family and friends initially took to social media and local channels to raise the alarm and seek information on her whereabouts.

Following a period of searching, her lifeless body was discovered in a secluded bush area along the Lokoja-Okene highway.

The discovery was particularly gruesome. Reports from the scene indicated that her body had been mutilated; specifically, her breasts and private parts had been removed. These types of targeted mutilations are the primary reason local authorities and the public suspect ritualistic motives.

Local sentiment and preliminary reports point toward ritualists, often colloquially associated with "Yahoo boys." In these tragic instances, body parts are often harvested under the belief that they can be used in "money rituals" to obtain supernatural wealth.
Aftermath and Community Reaction

The incident has heightened fear among the student body at FCE Okene and residents of Kogi State. It has led to renewed calls for the police to increase patrols along the Lokoja-Okene highway, which is known for security challenges.

While the Kogi State Police Command is typically tasked with investigating such homicides, cases involving ritual mutilation often face difficulties due to the clandestine nature of these criminal networks.
