Uterine Fibroid :Simple Facts Every Woman Should Know
Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths inside the womb. They are very common in women, especially between ages 20 and 45.
Many women have fibroids without knowing, but for others, it can cause serious problems with menstruation, fertility, and pregnancy.
Common signs of fibroid
• Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
• Passage of blood clots
• Lower abdominal swelling
• Pelvic pain or pressure
• Frequent urination
• Difficulty getting pregnant
• Miscarriage
• Weakness from blood loss (anemia)
Some women may have no symptoms and only find out during a scan.
How fibroid is diagnosed
• Pelvic examination
• Ultrasound scan
Can fibroid affect pregnancy?
Yes. Depending on the size and position, fibroids can delay pregnancy, cause miscarriage, or lead to complications in pregnancy.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the size, symptoms, and if the woman still wants to have children:
• Observation if small and not causing problems
• Drugs to control bleeding and pain
• Myomectomy (removal of fibroid, womb remains)
• Hysterectomy (removal of womb in severe cases)
There is no proven herbal cure that can remove fibroids.
What to do
If you have heavy periods, abdominal swelling, or difficulty conceiving, see a doctor and do a scan.
