When last did you go for wellness check?

Have You Gone for Your Wellness Check as a Woman?

Many women wait until they feel sick before going to the hospital. But serious conditions like breast cancer, cervical cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, and fibroids can stay silent for years without symptoms.

A simple women’s wellness check can detect these problems early, when treatment is easier, safer, and more affordable.

Every woman should routinely check:
• Blood pressure
• Blood sugar
• Breast examination
• Pap smear (cervical cancer screening)
• Pelvic scan when necessary

Do not wait for pain before you act. Early detection saves lives.

Your health is your first wealth.

Uterine Fibroid :Simple Facts Every Woman Should Know

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths inside the womb. They are very common in women, especially between ages 20 and 45.

Many women have fibroids without knowing, but for others, it can cause serious problems with menstruation, fertility, and pregnancy.

Common signs of fibroid
• Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
• Passage of blood clots
• Lower abdominal swelling
• Pelvic pain or pressure
• Frequent urination
• Difficulty getting pregnant
• Miscarriage
• Weakness from blood loss (anemia)

Some women may have no symptoms and only find out during a scan.

How fibroid is diagnosed
• Pelvic examination
• Ultrasound scan

Can fibroid affect pregnancy?

Yes. Depending on the size and position, fibroids can delay pregnancy, cause miscarriage, or lead to complications in pregnancy.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the size, symptoms, and if the woman still wants to have children:
• Observation if small and not causing problems
• Drugs to control bleeding and pain
• Myomectomy (removal of fibroid, womb remains)
• Hysterectomy (removal of womb in severe cases)

There is no proven herbal cure that can remove fibroids.

What to do

If you have heavy periods, abdominal swelling, or difficulty conceiving, see a doctor and do a scan.

Early detection gives better treatment options.

High blood pressure (hypertension) is one of the commonest health problems in Nigeria, and many people living with it do not know. It often shows no symptoms while quietly damaging vital organs. That is why it is called the silent killer.

When blood pressure stays high for a long time, it can lead to:
• Stroke (sudden weakness, slurred speech, paralysis)
• Heart enlargement and heart failure
• Kidney failure requiring dialysis
• Eye problems and poor vision
• Sudden collapse and death

The only way to know your blood pressure is to measure it.

Where you can check in Nigeria

You don’t need a big hospital to know your numbers:
• Community pharmacies
• Primary health centres
• Private and government hospitals
• Church or community health outreaches

It takes less than 5 minutes and is often free or very affordable.

What the numbers mean
• Normal: around 120/80 mmHg
• Elevated: 130–139 / 80–89 mmHg (needs lifestyle changes and monitoring)
• High: 140/90 mmHg or more (needs medical attention)

Important tips before checking
• Sit and rest for 5 minutes
• Avoid caffeine, alcohol, or smoking 30 minutes before
• Keep your arm relaxed at heart level
• Don’t talk during the measurement

Do not wait for headache, dizziness, or symptoms before you act. Many people with very high blood pressure feel completely fine.

Know your numbers. Check your blood pressure today. Your health is your first wealth.
