-L-C Urges Federal and State Governments to Emulate Imo on One Hundred and Four Thousand Naira Minimum Wage
‎
‎The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has called on the Federal Government and other state governments to follow the example of Imo State in adopting a one hundred and four thousand naira minimum wage for workers.
‎
‎NLC President, Joe Ajaero, made the appeal in Abuja during the Seventh National Quadrennial Delegates Conference of the National Union of Civil Engineering Construction, Furniture and Wood Workers.
‎
‎Ajaero praised Governor Hope Uzodimma’s decision to raise the minimum wage in Imo State, describing it as a commendable step that should inspire other states and the Federal Government to act in favour of workers’ welfare.
‎
‎The NLC insists that fair wages remain central to improving the living standards of Nigerian workers.
‎
‎Honestly, this is a bold move from Imo State, and it shows that when there is political will, there’s always a way. Other states and even the Federal Government should not only look at this as an example but also as a challenge to step up for workers who are battling with the rising cost of living.
‎
‎If one state can make it work, then others have no excuse. The real question is whether leaders across Nigeria are truly committed to workers’ welfare or just comfortable with speeches that don’t translate into action.
‎
‎Do you think other states can realistically pay ₦104,000 as minimum wage without excuses?

Equatorial Guinea jails Baltasar Engonga for embezzlement

A court in Equatorial Guinea has sentenced a senior government official, Baltasar Ebang Engonga, to eight years in prison for embezzlement, months after he became notorious over leaked s*x tapes with other officials’ wives.

The Bioko provincial tribunal convicted Baltasar Ebang Engonga of diverting money claimed as professional travel expenses for personal use, the supreme court press director Hilario Mitogo told reporters in a WhatsApp message.

Engonga, the married former head of the national financial investigation agency, and five other senior officials were accused of embezzling expenses worth hundreds of thousands of dollars in the oil-rich central African state.

Nicknamed “Bello”, Engonga made world headlines in November with the s*x tapes, some of them filmed in his office at the finance ministry, published on social media while he was in detention pending the embezzlement case.

The clips prompted a wave of online parodies, including songs and dances and posts about a spoof virility drug dubbed “Balthazariem”.

Mitogo said the provincial court handed Engonga an eight-year sentence and a fine worth $220,000.

Tinubu Woos Petrobras Back to Nigeria: What It Means for Our Economy

During his visit to Brazil, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu extended an open invitation to Petrobras- the Brazilian oil giant , to return to Nigeria’s offshore oil fields after more than a decade of absence. Alongside this call, both nations sealed bilateral agreements covering aviation, trade, and investment opportunities.

At face value, this move signals Nigeria’s eagerness to re-energize its oil and gas sector, which has suffered from dwindling investments and operational setbacks. If Petrobras accepts, it could bring in new technology, create jobs, and potentially boost oil output, a big plus for government revenue.

But here’s the deeper issue: Nigerians have heard promises like this before. Partnerships are signed, headlines make the rounds, but what trickles down to ordinary citizens? The average Nigerian wants to know, will cheaper fuel come from this? Will jobs actually reach the youth, or remain at boardroom level?

This Petrobras deal could be a lifeline for Nigeria’s fragile economy, but only if transparency, accountability, and citizen impact are placed at the heart of it. Otherwise, it risks becoming another elite handshake with little benefit for the people.

Now the question to Nigerians is this: Should we be optimistic that Petrobras’ return will change the energy story for ordinary citizens, or is this just another international PR move?
