REPORT ON THE 2026 EKITI STATE GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION RESULTS

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the incumbent Governor of Ekiti State, Biodun Oyebanji, as the winner of the 2026 Ekiti State Governorship Election. The announcement was made at the INEC State Collation Centre in Ado-Ekiti after the completion of the collation of results from the 16 local government areas of the state.

According to the Returning Officer, Professor Adenike Oladiji, Governor Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) secured 319,224 votes to emerge victorious. His closest rival, Dr. Oluwole Oluyede of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), polled 40,543 votes, while Dare Bejide of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) garnered 12,872 votes.

INEC disclosed that 384,940 voters were accredited, with 375,777 valid votes recorded. A total of 6,332 votes were rejected, bringing the total votes cast to 382,109.

The election was largely peaceful across the state, although there were reports of minor technical challenges involving the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and allegations of irregularities in some polling units. Security agencies maintained law and order throughout the exercise, while election observers commended the generally orderly conduct of the poll.

Governor Oyebanji's victory secures him a second term in office and marks a significant political milestone, as he successfully retained the governorship seat for the APC in Ekiti State.

The 2026 Ekiti Governorship Election concluded with the re-election of Governor Biodun Oyebanji of the APC. The outcome reflects the choice of the electorate and ushers in another four-year term for the incumbent administration as residents look forward to continued development and good governance in the state.

REPORT ON OYO STATE PROTEST OVER INSECURITY

Residents and protesters in Oyo State on Monday staged a peaceful demonstration and blocked major roads, including areas around the State Secretariat in Ibadan, to express their anger over the worsening security situation in the state. The protesters sat on the roads and obstructed free movement of vehicles and pedestrians as they demanded urgent government action on the growing cases of kidnapping and insecurity.

The demonstration was largely driven by concerns over the continued abduction of teachers, students, and other residents in parts of the state, particularly in Oriire Local Government Area. Protesters carried placards with various inscriptions calling on security agencies and government authorities to intensify efforts toward rescuing the victims and restoring peace across affected communities.

The protest caused traffic congestion around major routes and government facilities as movement was temporarily disrupted. Participants insisted that the government must take stronger measures to address insecurity and protect the lives of citizens. Reports indicated that the protesters demanded immediate action against kidnappers and other criminal elements operating within the state.

The protest reflects the growing frustration among residents over persistent security challenges in Oyo State. Many citizens called on both the state and federal governments to prioritize the safety of lives and property and ensure the swift rescue of all abducted victims.

FIRST LADY'S ₦100 MILLION EKITI GRANT SPARKS DEBATE AMID UNRESOLVED KIDNAPPING CASES

Ado-Ekiti — The visit of Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to Ekiti State and her announcement of a ₦100 million empowerment grant for 2,000 women have generated public discussion amid growing concerns over insecurity in parts of the South-West.

During a women-focused gathering in Ado-Ekiti, the First Lady urged residents to support the re-election of Governor Biodun Oyebanji in the forthcoming governorship election and announced the ₦100 million grant aimed at supporting women-owned businesses in the state. Beneficiaries are expected to receive ₦50,000 each as business support.

However, the development has drawn reactions from some citizens who argue that greater attention should be given to the worsening security situation in the region. Critics point to the recent kidnapping incidents in Oyo State and the unresolved abduction of worshippers at Eda-Oniyo in Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

The Ilejemeje incident occurred when armed men attacked a Christ Apostolic Church gathering, killed a pastor, and abducted several worshippers. Reports indicated that the kidnappers later demanded a huge ransom for the victims, while concerns remain over the fate of some of those abducted.

Many residents have expressed concern that while political campaigns and empowerment programmes continue, families affected by kidnapping and insecurity are still seeking justice and the safe return of their loved ones. The situation has fueled public debate on the need for stronger security measures alongside economic and political initiatives.

Supporters of the government, however, maintain that empowerment programmes and security operations are separate responsibilities and that efforts to improve the economy and support vulnerable groups should continue while security agencies tackle criminal activities.

As the debate continues, many Nigerians are calling for urgent and sustained action from all levels of government to address insecurity, secure the release of kidnapped victims, and restore public confidence in the nation's safety.

Items recovered from the suspects included two pump-action guns, one Beretta pistol, nine rounds of 9mm live ammunition, four live cartridges, substances suspected to be criminal charms, two Apple laptops, and a Honda Accord vehicle.

The police further disclosed that additional efforts led to the interception of an unregistered Toyota Sienna bus conveying four other fleeing suspects identified as Abanikanda Sikiru, Dayo Ibijowo, Ajayi Dele, and Adegbite Damola. A pump-action gun was also reportedly recovered from the vehicle.

During interrogation, the suspects allegedly confessed to being political thugs hired by Davidson Akinlayo, a serving member of the House of Representatives representing the Moba/Ilejemeje/Ido-Osi Federal Constituency, to destabilize the APC primaries.

The Commissioner of Police stated that the suspects would be charged to court upon completion of investigations, while efforts were ongoing to arrest other fleeing suspects and their alleged sponsor.
