World Press Day: NUJ zone B celebrates media workers
..advocates for better renumeration, incentives, others for reporters.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), zone B has lauded the painstaking efforts of reporters in various media outfits in the country in ensuring that information is adequately disseminated to all and sundry. The Union also commended members for having been serving faithfully as the brigde between the government and the governed.

Vice-President of the NUJ, South-West zone B, Comrade Ronke Samo, made the remarks in a statemenet made available to newsmen on Wednesday to herald this year's celebration of the World Press Freedom Day (WPFD).

The statememt reads in part: "On this important day of the celebration of the World Press Freedom Day (WPFD), l commend comrades in the struggle and my dear colleagues who have tirelessly been serving faithfully as the fourth estate of the realm and bridging the gap between the government and the governned.

The WPFD was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993 in New York as a day set aside for Reporters to associate, identify and celebrate media workers all over the World.
Media workers in both the print and electronics have been subject of attacks, harassment, intimidation, oppression and even murder in some cases all over the world.

The UN is conscious of the nature of the hazardous nature of the job of media workers as the bridge between the government and the governed, mouthpiece of the downtrodden and the hope of the hopeless.
As such, May 3rd of every year was set aside to recognise these painstaking efforts and solidiarise with media workers as a way of promoting their chosen profession.

The Nigeria media workers have been very diligent, committed and dedicated to the patriotic cause of serving as the fourth estate of the realm and on this day, they deserve the accolades, honour and garlands as 'soldiers' of the people.

As a way of further celeebrating ourselves, we have organized a lecture to honour this day with the theme, FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION AS A DRIVER FOR ALL OTHER HUMAN RIGHTS .

With the lecture, we hope to further enlighten all stakeholders that true freedom of the press will gurrantee continued protection of the fundermental human rights of all citizens and create a better society for all.

While inviting all and sundry to grace the August ocassion, l use this medium to celebrate and encourage my colleagues that we should not relent but forge ahead as there ia surely light at the end of the tunnel in our legitimate pursuit for true freedom of the press in Nigeria.

We also use this medium to urge media enterprenuers, employers and the government to prioritize better welfare packages, renumeration and other incentives to work for media workers in Nigeria as this will surely motivate our colleagues for more effecient, effective and robust services ti our dear country.

Long live NUJ, long live Nigeria

Signed

.. Urges Nigerian men to keep encouraging, allowing women's visibility

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Zone B, has commended the courage and doggedness of the Nigeria women in politics and other spheres of life in recent times, noting that women have began to make more meaningful impact on the growth and development of the country.

Vice-President of the NUJ, South West Zone, Comrade Ronke Afebioye- Samo, in a release on Wednesday, noted that Nigeria women of this generation deserve commendation for their active and productive roles in the public sphere and thus, "deserve to be celebrated on a day like the women's day which is today".

Samo observed that women are taking greater responsibilities in the present day Nigeria and this is exemplified by a female Deputy Governor emerging in Ekiti, Office of the First Lady being recognized , women emerging as Presidential, Governorship and Senatorial candidates of political parties as well as more women becoming ministers in the cabinet of the Federal Government. She said this is a welcome development in the country.

The release reads further: " We use a day like this to celebrate these great and aspiring Nigerian women who are making the Nigerian womenfolk really proud with their focus and achievements in all ways.

"We salute their courage and doggedness in ensuring that they compete favourably well with men in governance, politics, and the corporate world, among others.

"We equally use this medium to advocate for more support for our women in their aspirations for greater heights. We therefore, urge the menfolk not to see these aspiring women as having inordinate ambitions but positive ambitions that would make our society much better if achieved.

"We also advocate for more empowerment for our women in terms of educational empowerment for the girl child, occupational or vocational empowerment for young and middle aged women in need of such and a level playing ground for all the women with men in their pursuit of greater and loftier heights in their various fields of human endeavour.

" Above all, we salute our women who are soaring high in their fields and making the world to realize that there is so much that women can do to make things better in our world.

"God bless the Nigerian women, God bless our men and long live Nigeria," Samo said.

World Radio Day: NUJ Zone B urges radio broadcasters on reporting for peace, stability

As the nation grapples with challenges borne out of scarcity of naira notes and fuel price hike, the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Zone B,(Southwest States)has urged broadcasters in the radio stations across the country, to ensure that the medium of communication is deployed to promote peace and stability.

The Vice-President of NUJ, Zone B, Comrade Ronke Afebioye -Samo, in a press statement to commemorate the 2023 World Radio Day said, this year's world radio day anniversary is significant as it's theme anchors on Peace, she therefore urged Journalists in Radio stations to work towards promoting peace among the citizenry in discharging their duties.
Her words: " As we mark the World Radio Day today, with the theme, Radio And Peace, l urge our colleagues in this veritable platform of communication to promote peace and stability in discharging their duties.
Radio is a very instrumental and impactful medium of communication. It is very effective in reaching the grassroots. Besides, radio's advantage in being assessible to virtually all classes of the society makes it very useful for promoting development messages, policies and plans.

World Radio Day is an International Day celebrated on Feb.13th of every year as decided by member states of UNESCO and adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2012.

Radio was adjudged a mass media reaching widest audience and a powerful medium for celebrating humanity in all it's diversity.B

Radio,as a low cost medium was specifically made to reach remote communities and vulnerable people, offering a platform to intervene in public debate, irrespective of people's educational level.

The WRD is celebrated to preserve the timeless medium and create awareness of the importance of radio.

Radio stations shapes public opinions and frame a narrative that can influence domestic and international decision making processes.

We therefore urge our colleagues to leverage on the advantages of the radio to promote peace, especially during a time like this that our dear country is witnessing challenges of fuel scarcity and price hike, including scarcity of naira notes which have led to protests and dissatisfaction from some quarters in the country.

It is pertinent that we use our medium to disseminate messages that will bring succour and calm the frayed nerves of our people.
I also congratulate all broadcasters in the Nigeria radio industry and felicitate them on this important celebration," she said.
