Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland and paramount ruler of the Ijebu people, was laid to rest today, at his private residence in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
The highly respected monarch, who died at 91, was buried in a quiet and dignified ceremony. The private burial was attended by his family, Ijebu high chiefs, and notable dignitaries from across Nigeria.
Among those present were Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, ex-Ogun Governor Otunba Gbenga Daniel, billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote, and Fuji icon Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (K1 De Ultimate).
Oba Adetona became king in 1960 at the age of 26 and ruled for an exceptional 65 years, making him one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning monarchs. He was widely admired for his courageous leadership, dedication to the development of Ijebuland, and his ability to merge traditional values with modern governance.
While the burial itself was a private affair, thousands of Ijebu natives mourned his passing across the town, remembering him as a fearless and progressive leader who upheld integrity and justice throughout his reign.
Born on May 10, 1934, Oba Adetona is remembered as a defender of traditional institutions, a forward-thinking ruler, and a steadfast advocate for the welfare of the Ijebu people at both state and national levels.
His death signals the close of a significant chapter in Yoruba royal history and Nigeria’s traditional leadership. The Ogun State Government is expected to unveil more commemorative events in his honour in the coming days.
