St. John I
He was a Catholic Pope from the year 523 to 526. He was born in the year 470 in Tuscany. He was elected pope on August 13, 523. He was pope for a short period of 2 years 9 months and 7 days only. His father was Constantius and St. John-I was arch-deacon for many years before becoming Pope. During his papacy Emperor Justin issued a severe decree in the year 523 directing the A***n sect of Christians to surrender the churches occupied by them, to Catholics. But Emperor Theodoric, King of Ostrogoths and Italy, who was an A***n Christian (a Christian sect that denies divinity of Jesus), sent pope John-I to Constantinople to meet Emperor Justin to withdraw the decree issued by him against the A***ns. St. John-I went there with some bishops and Senators and Emperor Justin received them honorably and promised to do anything except restoring earlier converts from A***nism to catholic faith back to their original faith- A***nism. Pope John-I conducted the Easter Liturgy in Constantinople on April 19, 526 and Emperor Justin prostrated himself at the feet of the pope. When Pope John-I returned to Ravenna, Emperor Theodoric arrested the pope on the suspicion of having conspired with Emperor Justin. Pope John-I died in imprisonment at Ravenna due to ill-treatment and starvation. His body was transported to Rome and buried in the Basilica of St. Peter.
