Police Recover 245 Cattle From Bandits, Foil Kidnap Attempt

The Kaduna State Police Command has foiled two separate cattle rustling and kidnapping attempts in Igabi and Hunkuyi LGAs, recovering 245 rustled cattle in Kaduna State.

The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Kaduna State Command, DSP Mansir Hassan, in a statement on Monday, indicated that the first incident occurred in the early hours of 31st May, 2026, where armed bandits invaded a Fulani settlement on the outskirts of Rubu Village, tied up three cattle herders and several guards, and rustled a large number of cattle. The incident was reported by the Chairman of Miyetti Allah, Igabi LGA.

The PPRO said that on receiving credible intelligence, the DPO, Rigachikun Division, immediately mobilized police operatives, Miyetti Allah vigilantes, and the Civilian Joint Task Force, for a coordinated pursuit. The joint team trailed the suspects while alerting neighboring communities, mounting intense pressure on the bandits.

Unable to withstand the pursuit, the bandits abandoned the stolen cattle and their captives and fled into the bush. Over 200 cattle were recovered unharmed. Efforts to apprehend the fleeing suspects are ongoing, the PPRO said.

In the same vein, Following a separate report of cattle rustling, the DPO, Hunkuyi Division, launched an investigation and surveillance operation. In the early hours of 31st May, 2026, credible intelligence placed the rustled cattle in a bush at Hawan Mai Mashi along the Zaria–Kano Expressway.

A combined team of police operatives and the Kaduna State Vigilance Service was dispatched to the location. On sighting the team, the armed bandits opened fire. The operatives responded with superior firepower, forcing the bandits to flee with suspected gunshot injuries and abandon all 45 cattle.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Muhammad, commended the synergy between the Police, Miyetti Allah vigilantes, CJTF, KADVIS, and community members. He described the operations as proof of effective community-based policing and intelligence sharing.

CP Muhammad urged residents to sustain their support with timely and credible information, reaffirming the Command’s commitment to protecting lives, property, and livestock across the State.

PRESS RELEASE

FALSE ALARM OVER ALLEGED BANDIT ATTACK IN OGBOMOSO AND AJAAWA: OYO POLICE RESTORE CALM, WARN AGAINST FAKE NEWS AND MISINFORMATION

The Oyo State Police Command wishes to inform members of the public that normalcy has been fully restored in Ogbomoso and adjoining communities following a false alarm and the circulation of misleading information alleging the presence of suspected bandits within the area.

Earlier today, Monday 19th May, 2026, panic spread across parts of Ogbomoso and neighbouring communities, including Ajaawa Town, following rumours alleging that armed bandits had attacked the area and invaded the vicinity of Are-Ago High School, Ogbomoso. Considering the fear and apprehension generated by the report, the Command immediately deployed surveillance and patrol teams to the scene to ascertain the true situation and prevent any breakdown of law and order.

Upon arrival at the location, operatives met with the school principal, Mrs. Akanbi Ruth, who explained that the alarm originated from information allegedly circulated among some students who claimed that certain unfamiliar individuals had been sighted behind the school fence. This naturally raised suspicion among some teachers and students, prompting immediate concern within the school environment.

Preliminary investigation, however, revealed that the individuals involved were an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) attached to the Kwara State Command, Ilorin, alongside two other civilians who were found in a Toyota Venza SUV. The individuals were questioned and explained that they had merely visited the lady among them in celebration of her birthday. In the course of verification and due diligence, relevant NSCDC authorities in Ogbomoso were equally contacted to confirm the identity and status of the officer involved.

It was further observed that during the interaction, an altercation reportedly occurred between some teachers and the visitors, which inadvertently heightened suspicion within the school premises. Consequently, some students began spreading unverified claims to neighbouring schools and surrounding communities, thereby escalating panic and tension across parts of Ogbomoso and Ajaawa Town before the actual facts of the incident were established.

Consequently, the Oyo State Police Command wishes to categorically state that there was no bandit attack, invasion, or any form of security breach in the affected areas as falsely portrayed. In response to the situation, patrols and visibility policing around the affected communities were immediately intensified, while critical stakeholders were engaged to reassure residents and restore public confidence. The area remains peaceful, while normal academic, commercial, and social activities have since resumed.

The Command therefore strongly warns against the deliberate spread of fake news, misinformation, and unverified security reports capable of causing unnecessary panic, heightening tension, and undermining public peace. The dissemination of false information, particularly on security-related matters, has the potential to create avoidable chaos, disrupt socio-economic activities, and negatively affect the collective security efforts being sustained across the state.

Members of the public, especially youths and social media users, are advised to refrain from forwarding or amplifying unconfirmed reports without proper verification from appropriate security agencies. Individuals found deliberately peddling fake news or spreading false information intended to incite fear or public disorder will be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbemiga, psc, mnips, urges residents to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding while continuing to cooperate with the Police and other security agencies through the prompt sharing of credible and timely information capable of enhancing public safety and security across the state.

It is not far-fetched to state that the Fiwasaye Roundabout urgently requires total upgrading. The persistent traffic gridlock along this axis during peak hours has become increasingly discomforting for motorists and residents alike.

The call for improvement—similar to the upgrades witnessed at First Bank, NEPA, and ShopRite junctions —was once again re-echoed following the unfortunate incident of a fallen truck, which further compounded the already heavy traffic in the area. This recurring challenge underscores the urgent need for decisive intervention.

It is high time the Fiwasaye road corridor receives the necessary improvements and comprehensive upgrade, to enhance traffic flow, ensure safety, and support the growing movement within this part of the city.

Court grants Emefiele ₦2bn bail

Justice Halilu Yusuf of the Federal Capital Territory High Court on Monday granted former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, a bail at ₦2 billion bail.

Justice Yusuf granted the bail after Emefiele was arraigned on an eight-count charge in which he is accused of, among others, unlawfully acquiring a housing estate comprising 753 units, allegedly stealing and taking control of billions of naira in proxy accounts.

In the ruling, Justice Yusuf noted that Emefiele had been granted bail in three other criminal cases pending against him and that there was no evidence that he had jumped bail.

He then proceeded to admit him to bail on the condition that he must produce two sureties, who must own property worth ₦ 2 billion in either Asokoro, Maitama or Wuse 2 within the jurisdiction of the court. Justice Yusuf ordered Emefiele to submit his travel documents to the court and directed that he must perfect the bail by Wednesday, failing which he would be remanded in custody
