THE VOICES THAT KNOW MY NAME
Adaeze first heard the dead on the night her mother was buried.
It did not begin with screams or visions.
It began with memory.
She lay awake on a raffia mat in her childhood room, staring at the old ceiling where smoke had stained the thatch black. Outside, the village slept. Even the insects were quiet, as though the night itself was listening.
Then she heard it.
“Adaeze…”
The voice came gently, spoken the way her mother used to call her when supper was ready. Not loud. Not urgent. Familiar.
Adaeze’s chest tightened.
Grief does strange things, she told herself. It imitates voices. It dresses pain in sound.
She turned to the wall and shut her eyes.
“Adaeze…”
This time, closer.
She sat up.
The oil lamp flickered. Shadows leaned where they should not lean. The room felt smaller, as if the darkness had taken a breath and refused to let it out.
“Mother?” she whispered before she could stop herself.
The moment the word left her mouth, the night exhaled.
The voice smiled.
The elders said some people are born with thin ears—ears that hear what the world hides. Adaeze had laughed at such stories as a child. She was educated. A city woman. Rational.
But by the third night, she knew something was wrong.
The voices did not beg.
They did not threaten.
They remembered.
They spoke of things no living person knew: the blue dress she buried with her mother, the lie she once told that caused her cousin’s death, the prayer she stopped believing in when life became cruel.
The dead knew her.
And worse—they waited for her to answer.
During the day, Adaeze was safe. Sunlight sealed the world. But night peeled it open. Whispers followed her from room to room. If she covered her ears, they spoke inside her chest. If she prayed, they finished her prayers for her.
An old woman named Nwanyibuife came to see her on the seventh day.
“You have answered them,” the woman said, drawing a line of white chalk across Adaeze’s doorway. “That is how it begins.”
Adaeze shook
