5 things you should do once you arrive a foreign country using the UK 🇬🇧 as an example.
1. Secure where you’ll lay your head:
The first thing that gives peace of mind abroad is accommodation. Even if it’s temporary, make sure it’s stable. Without a proper address, opening a bank account or even getting letters delivered becomes wahala.
2. Get yourself a UK SIM card:
From job applications to GP registration, everyone will ask for a UK number. Plus, calling home with your roaming line will finish your pocket money in days 😂. Giffgaff, Lyca, EE, Tesco Mobile, just grab one and start life properly.
3. Open a bank account:
Life here runs on cards and direct debits. No account, no salary, no rent payment, no peace. Thankfully, online banks like Monzo, Starling, or Revolut make it simple if you don’t want the long queues.
4. Register with a GP (Doctor):
Here you can’t just walk into a hospital anyhow. You need to be on a GP’s list to get medical help (except emergencies). Register early, so you’re not struggling when flu or stress decides to visit.
5. Learn the transport system:
Google Maps is your new best friend. Understand buses, trains, and contactless payments fast. If not, you’ll either miss stops or pay more than you should. Trust me, one wrong train can carry you far from your destination 😅.
These steps may look small, but they’ll save you stress, money, and unnecessary embarrassment in your first weeks here.
