The riverine community of Safarogbo in Edo State, Nigeria, is overflowing with joy as Dr. Timi Ojujoh Oriaku, a daughter of the community, makes history as the first African to win the Society of Petroleum Engineers' (SPE) prestigious Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Award.
In a statement jointly signed by the Families of Ojujoh, Foroijoh, and the entire Safarogbo Community leaders, which was made available to our Safaragbo correspondent, Dr. Oriaku's groundbreaking contributions to environmental protection, health, and safety in petroleum operations earned her global recognition at the SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE) 2025 Awards Banquet in Houston, Texas, USA.

Pride of Safarogbo! Families of Ojujoh, Foroijoh, and the Entire Community Celebrate Dr. Timi Oriaku; First African Honoured With Global HSE Award
Jubilation has swept through the riverine community of Safarogbo in Ovia South-West Local Government Area of Edo State, as the families of Ojujoh, Foroijoh, and the entire Safarogbo community proudly celebrate their illustrious daughter, Dr. Timi Ojujoh Oriaku, for making history as the first African and Nigerian to win the prestigious Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Award of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) since the award’s inception in 1991.
The historic announcement which was made during the SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE) 2025 Awards Banquet held in Houston, Texas, USA, on October 21, 2025, where Dr. Oriaku’s groundbreaking contributions to environmental protection, health, and safety in petroleum operations earned her global recognition.
Dr. Oriaku, who heads the Environmental Management Division of NNPC Exploration & Production Limited (NEPL), stood tall among world energy leaders as she received the global honour; a first for Africa in the award’s 35-year history.
Her recognition, according to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd), “reflects the rising excellence of Nigerian professionals on the global stage.”
“Dr. Oriaku’s exceptional technical expertise, commitment to sustainability, and transformative impact as the World Environment Day Theme Ambassador in NEPL Host Communities have set a new benchmark for environmental protection and social responsibility,” NNPC Limited stated.
The families and kinsmen, further affirmed that her win “delivers global recognition not only for her country home Nigeria but for Africa,” while reaffirming her dedication to promoting sustainable excellence across the continents.
At home in Safarogbo, the joy is overwhelming as her family and kinsmen describe her global recognition as “a divine moment of pride for the entire community.”
“We are overwhelmed with joy. Dr. Timi has carried our name and indeed Nigeria’s flag to the highest international stage. Her win is a message to every young woman that hard work and vision can break any ceiling,” said Engr. Kimiebi Doumini Ojujoh, father of the honouree, in a heartfelt message of gratitude.
The Families of Ojujoh and Foroijoh, alongside the entire Safarogbo community, issued a joint congratulatory statement, celebrating their daughter’s feat and expressing gratitude to God and to Nigerians for their support.

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), a leading international body that promotes innovation and technical excellence in the global oil and gas industry, established the HSE Award in 1991 to honour individuals who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and achievement in health, safety, and environmental management.
With Dr. Timi Oriaku’s win, that honour has, for the first time in its history, come home to Nigeria — through an Ijaw born woman from Safarogbo whose brilliance, resilience, and leadership continue to illuminate the global energy landscape.
