Today marks five years since I entered the radio industry, and I've spent the last four years as a proud staff member of Trend100.9fm.
My venture into the world of radio was a journey filled with unexpected twists and transformative growth. Although I've always had a knack for business and innovative ideas, marketing was never on my radar. I admired being recognized as a radio presenter, but life had different plans for me, and I learned that following passion could sometimes lead to unexpected and fulfilling paths.
After my school days, during my NYSC in Delta State, I found myself in the OBS department as a news reader. Guided by Mr. Philip, I nervously auditioned and became part of the news team. As my journey led me to Trend1009fm Asaba, the transition wasn't seamless. Initially expecting to resume news reading, I found myself in the news department doing Vox Pops. My enthusiasm was noticed, and by the end of my service year in 2019, I was honored as the News Department staff of the year.
On January 2, 2020, exactly four years ago today, the unexpected twist happened when I received my appointment letter. To my shock, I was posted to the Marketing department. Thoughts of resigning or finding another job crossed my mind, wondering how I would tell someone I am a marketer. 😂
My journey in marketing began with small victories after over six months of no sales. My first sale, a modest 20k, felt like a triumph. With the GM's encouragement and praise, I gradually found my footing. I began to appreciate the joy of making people happy and helping businesses succeed through effective marketing.
Venturing into radio programming out of curiosity, I became more drawn to the financial side of the industry. I discovered that radio success involved marketing prowess, not just being on air.
In 2021, I won Marketing Department staff of the Year. In 2022, I made it into the top 5 highest Sales and Marketing staff. A particular gig in that year exceeded the total sales I made in 2021 and 2020 combined. My desire for marketing soared; I moved from hating and struggling in sales/marketing to being someone who loves marketing/sales.
In 2023, I surpassed those initial marks and became a top marketer within my space. I now make sales with ease and comfort. In 2023, I was appointed Head of Sales and Strategy, leading a team and hosting the successful Street Jam in Asaba (the biggest and first of it kind in Asaba), discovering two highly talented music artists.
Today, I’ve not gotten anywhere close to where I want to be, but I make bold to say that marketing is now like Oxygen to me. If I were to leave the radio industry today, it would be because I've shifted my focus away from marketing. My journey has opened doors to connections with billionaires, multi-millionaires, captains of industries, and esteemed individuals.
I am eternally grateful for the unexpected path that led me to where I am today, and I continue to embrace opportunities with open arms.
This is me celebrating four years in the Media Space with the best radio station, , as a Marketer, Strategist, Radio Presenter, Voice Over Artist, and Media Consultant. I am grateful to God, My MD, Agatha Amata, former GM, Madam Ijeoma, current GM, Belushi TREND 100.9FM Asaba who reminds me daily by asking how much I’ve brought. Also, to former and present colleagues of Trend100.9FM Asaba and above all, I am thankful to loyal partners, clients who made all the sales possible. 2024 promises to be another great year to partner with the biggest and most listened radio station in Asaba, Delta State.
