: DESTMA DG Orders Arrest of VIO Major Over Alleged Illegal Operations on Road Corridors

The Director-General of the Delta State Traffic Management Authority Destma, Hon. Dr. Benjamin Essien Okiemute, has directed the agency’s Provost Department to arrest any VIO major found carrying out operational activities on DESTMA road corridors across Delta State.

The DG stated that VIO majors do not have the legal backing to operate on road corridors under the jurisdiction of DESTMA in the state.

Dr. Okiemute also reviewed the agency’s beat leadership structure one week after the recent change of leadership and reaffirmed the various DESTMA beat leaders.

He further directed the Rescue Operational Team to be proactive in responding to emergency calls from operational personnel. He also instructed DESTMA drivers to ensure that operational vehicles under their care are properly maintained and kept in good working condition.

The DG further announced that personnel who default in their official duties and violate established regulations would have their hazard allowance withdrawn as part of measures to enforce discipline within the agency.

Meanwhile, the Director of Operations, Engr. Francis Edema, warned personnel against wearing earrings, using drugs and consuming alcohol while on duty.

He also directed officers to always answer official calls, irrespective of the person making the call, stressing the importance of effective communication in the discharge of their duties.

NDLEA Destroys N301bn Worth of Illicit Drugs in Lagos

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has destroyed 329,865.585 kilogrammes of assorted illicit drugs with an estimated street value of N301.058 billion in Lagos.

The court-ordered destruction exercise was carried out on Monday following the conclusion of uncontested cases and abandoned seizures.

According to the agency, 246,864.535kg of the drugs were seized by the Lagos Strategic Command between April 2025 and May 2026, while another 83,001.05kg came from various commands operating within Lagos, including the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Tincan and Apapa.

The destroyed substances included co***ne, he**in, methamphetamine, cannabis, Canadian Loud, skunk, ephedrine, tramadol, codeine syrup, other opioids and khat leaves.

NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), described the exercise as a demonstration of Nigeria’s resolve to deny drug traffickers the resources needed to sustain their criminal operations.

Marwa warned drug barons, traffickers, financiers and dealers that the agency would continue to pursue and dismantle their networks and financial structures.

He also stressed that illicit drug trafficking contributes to wider security challenges by providing resources that can fuel organised crime, terrorism and violent extremism.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented at the event by the Secretary to the State Government, Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, described the destruction of about 300 tonnes of narcotics as a sobering reminder of the scale of the drug threat facing communities and young Nigerians.

: Army Draws Battle Line Against Lakurawa, Vows ‘No Safe Haven’

The Nigerian Army has intensified security operations in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State following renewed concerns over the activities and possible infiltration of communities by the Lakurawa terrorist group.

The move followed a reported attack on Ungushi community, prompting the General Officer Commanding, 8 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Bemgha Paul Koughna, to conduct an operational assessment of the Forward Operating Base in Kebbe and surrounding communities.

Koughna said the Army has adjusted its security architecture to prevent terrorists from establishing a foothold in vulnerable communities, particularly along the Sokoto-Kebbi border corridor.

He also assured residents of the Army’s continued presence and urged them to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing timely information that could help detect and disrupt terrorist activities.

The Army maintained that terrorists and other criminal elements will not be allowed to turn Kebbe into a safe haven.

: 2027: Appointments Will Be Based on Competence Under NDC Govt – Kwankwaso

The Vice-Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has said political appointments under an NDC government will be based primarily on competence, experience and the needs of the country.

Kwankwaso made the statement while speaking during the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Personality Interview Series in Abuja.

He said an NDC administration would not appoint people simply because of political affiliation or personal connections, but would prioritise qualified technocrats, professionals and experienced politicians.

According to him, specialised ministries require people with the relevant professional knowledge and experience to deliver effectively.

Kwankwaso also said an NDC government would avoid unnecessary delays in constituting its cabinet, arguing that elected leaders have only four years to deliver on their mandates and should therefore begin work immediately after assuming office.

He added that effective delegation of responsibilities to capable appointees would promote good governance and improve outcomes for Nigerians.
