A Good Question...
DID THE FOREMOST DISCIPLES REALLY SPEAK HUMAN LANGUAGES ON THE DAY OF PENTECOST?
Over the years, I have heard some sects taunt Believers in Christ Jesus, on the issue of SPEAKING IN TONGUES.
The thrust of their arguments had always being hinged on the claim that the foremost disciples, who were in the Upper Room, on the Day of Pentecost spoke HUMAN LANGUAGES.
This they say,in order to discredit what we do/have today as speaking in tongues.
Little did they know, that the foremost disciples SPOKE AS THE SPIRIT GAVE THEM UTTERANCE, jqust as we speak today.
Lets look at the following Scriptures for clarity:
Acts 2:3 - Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language.
The VERSE 6 says: ...everyone HEARD them SPEAK in his own language...
Note: the emphasis is on HEARD THEM SPEAK.
In other words, the people who gathered around, HEARD THE DISCIPLES in their own languages.
NOT THAT THE DISCIPLES SPOKE DIFFERENT HUMAN LANGUAGES, rather, God opened the SPIRITUAL EARS(understanding) of those witnesses around to hear those proclamations in their own languages.
Acts 2:7 ---- Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born?
Again, the emphasis is on VERSE 8 ---- And how is it that WE HEAR,each in OUR OWN language...
Note: THEY SAID, THEY HEARD THEM IN THEIR OWN LANGUAGE.
NOT THAT THEY SPOKE IN THEIR OWN LANGUAGE.
We all can see that, that the DISCIPLES did not speak various human languages, rather, they spoke the UTTERANCES of the Holy Spirit; and the Lord gave the by-standers the INTERPRETATIONS in their variable native languages.
Else, how does one explain a piece of Scripture as this:
1 Corin 14:2 -For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.
The Scriptures do not contradict themselves, they only buttress one another.
Here the Scriptures affirm that, one who speaks in a tongue, does NOT speak to men(HUMAN LANGUAGES), but to God.
It says no one UNDERSTANDS him...
If it were HUMAN LANGUAGES, it would not have said: no one understands him.
From the above, it has become clearer that the disciples at the Upper Room spoke MYSTERIES and not human languages, but for the sake of the witnesses, THE LORD GAVE THEM THE INTERPRETATIONS IN THEIR OWN LANGUAGES.
Acts 2:11 - Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.”
Remember, by the mouth of two or three witnesses, every testimony shall be established.
Acts2:6, 8 and 11 keep bearing the same witness: THAT THE PEOPLE HEARD THEM IN THEIR OWN LANGUAGES and NOT THAT THE DISCIPLES SPOKE... human languages.
